Which singlecoil for gilmour tone? 62 avri strat
« on: November 24, 2012, 03:03:26 PM »
Hi, im thinking about swapping the pickups in my 1987 avri62 stratocaster. I guess im going in the direction of somewhat near the gilmour black strat. So somewhat vintage sounding pickups but with some oomph! :) Slow hand perhaps? Btw for those who dont know 62's it has a rosewood fretboard =) My amp is a jcm 800
Cheers!

This has come up before I think.
What you want for authentic DG sounds is a vintage sounding neck and middle with a slightly hotter bridge I think.

This page

has a rundown of his black strat over the years, -> he swapped bits and pieces all over the place and has had loads of different pickups in it, so picking one set is tough! If I was buying, I would probably go for apache or the 59 slab board set for neck and middle, with either the Irish tour or slowhand bridge.

Slowhands are the obvious choice.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Slowhands will be fine for the bridge, but will be overwound for the neck and middle. Specs for his neck and middle are apparently 5.7-5.9kohms resistance, whereas the slowhands are wound heavier (6.5). They'll give a more middy sound and you'll lose some of the "stratiness" IMHO.

I immediately thought Apaches, just because Gilmour's warm Strat tone seems to come so much from that British '60s tradition.  With something a bit hotter in the bridge, just for practicality.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I would say Mother's Milk for the neck and middle (as they have the mid to late 60s spec of plain enamel wire and 5.8k) and a Slow Hand or Irish Tour for the bridge.

BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

There was a 69 Custom set which had the pickups for the DG sound.  I seem to remember that the bridge was something like 14k, with 5.9k for neck & middle.  Unfortunately, sine the house got flooded, I don't think that I've got the exact spec for them anymore.
So many pickups, so little time

Try a Trilogy Suite bridge with the '59 Slab Board middle and neck - pretty much spot on for the Gilmour sound.

Also look at an EMG SPC and EXG tone controls.  These CAN be used with passive pups such as our beloved BKP's.
This is what he uses - (but with EMG pups)

Thanks but im not really after his EMG tones, more of his black strat. Guess most pickups will do aslong as i stay with something more vintage for neck/mid and a slightly hotter bridge. Just got to nail that $%&#ing fealing...

I went with PAT PEND STRAT '63 Veneer Board's in the neck and middle and a Seymour Duncan Custom SSL-1C DG in the bridge. I also wired up a mini toggle switch to activate the '63 neck pickup when desired.

To my ears, this nailed DG's tone.
