Best Choice for RG 550's
« on: December 15, 2012, 12:48:53 AM »
Hi there, i have just purchased a pair of early 90's Ibanez rg550'S and am looking at getting some BKP to replace the V series pickups currently in there. One of the guitars has an AANJ and the other has a full sized heel and to me, the one without the AANJ sounds better and has more punch to the tone but this may be due to something other than just the neck?

I have always used EMG 81/85 in my main guitars and am getting bored and want something with a bit more character, although I am a fan of EMG's im starting to find them increasingly sterile. I was initially looking towards dimarzio PAF or super distortion for leaving 1 guitar in standard going for a 80's shred paul gilbert kinda tone whilst going for something a bit more modern with the other guitar which will be in D/Drop C, something upper mid heavy but with tight crushing bass, any suggestions from you guys more knowledgeable would be much appreciated.

For the 80s shred guitar I would recommend a Holydiver or Alnico Nailbomb for the bridge and a Cold Sweat or Rebel Yell for the neck.

I don't play in Drop-C  but for that purpose the pickups most often recommended are the Painkiller and the Aftermath.

Cheers Stephan
