Cold Sweat bridge - wiring observations
« on: December 15, 2012, 02:04:44 PM »
Wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the tech subforum, but since it has more to do with tone, I think this is the right place.

Anyway, I was experimenting with different pickups in my PRS and since the magnet in the bridge pickup needs to be flipped in order to work with the 5-way rotary switch, I started messing with the pickup wires. Long story short, I ended up with the CS wired directly to the volume pot (bypassing the switch) and I could swear it sounded different. With BKPs, the red wire is hot and the black is ground, but I tried reversing these two wires. BINGO! That was the tone change I was hearing! With the "black = hot" the tone was clearer and bit tighter. It also seemed to bring up the mids a tad and even out the EQ response. With the "red = hot" the low end was too distorted and the low mids sounded a bit bloated in this particular guitar.

I'm not sure if I should even be hearing a difference, but in this guitar "black = hot" sound better to my ears. Anybody know what's happening tech-wise and why I'm hearing a difference? Has anybody experimented with this? I think it's definitely worth trying since it takes you about 30 seconds to switch wires.

Very interesting. Normally you should not hear any difference. It could be that the polarity of the signal has changed and that this works better with the rest of your set up. But that is just a guess.

Cheers Stephan
