NB and RY neck pickups? How do they compare?
« on: January 28, 2013, 06:25:58 AM »
I've done a lot of searching on the forum and can't find what I am after really, so thought I would ask the question directly.  I was looking for new pickups for my LP Custom, and after a lot of thought, decided to go with what I know I like and works which is the Nailbomb bridge.  I have recently bought a set of Nailbombs from seconds out and am waiting to get them installed when I get back to the UK...they are patiently waiting at my sister's house.
Anyway, I haven't ever had a neck NB before, and I have read as much as I can find about it - with the general description being "bright".  In another guitar I have a Rebel Yell neck pup, which I remember liking a lot, but it has been a long time since I played that guitar that I don't remember clearly how it sounds.  Before you guys say "maybe try playing the guitar", I'm currently working in Beijing, so won't be back in the UK for another few weeks, and then only for a brief visit.

Cut a long story short - how do the RY and NB necks compare?  Anyone had both?  Anyone just had one and have a good review of it?  Trying to decide which one to bring back to China to put in my guitar.
Thanks.

I have the RY neck in my LP Custom. It is similar in voicing to the Cold Sweat neck but appears to have less bass (did not try them in the same guitar). Nice clear tone that is singing enough for leads. It balances well with the RY bridge and should also be able to keep up with the hotter A-Bomb.

Never played the Nailbomb neck so I cannot help here, unfortunately.

Cheers Stephan

That's really helpful, thanks. Had not been able to find much written on the RY neck.

I like it for cleans, it cleans up really nicely. That's my main use for it.

didn't try the rebel yell, but compared to the neck cold sweat, the neck nailbomb is hotter, louder, brighter and very scooped (both were installed in a '73 les paul custom)
reminds of the duncan 59 mid-hollow tones, but with the attack of a ceramic single coil
I can see some uses for it, like funk or power metal soloing, but that was my least favorite neck bkp

Excellent thanks.  I think I will start off trying the Abomb bridge and RYell neck combination.
