Great stuff,Trace sounds like the man to go to for sure, love AC/DC in general but yeah some of their tone is sublime and to be able to even get close is an achievement in itself,so congrats and a job well done Trace and another satisfied customer.

Indeed, their tones seem like some of the easiest to cop, but I've never been able to pull off a convincing brothers Young tone.

he suggested a different tube because my choice was too much bottom and the wrong kind of bottom (muddy)

I actually have two of his Voodoo V-plex 50 watt MV amps. On the one that I was having modded, Trace had been working with a well known guitar player who wanted the amp tweaked for a little less high's. When he did this, it added a touch more gain, and low end. I was looking for the same thing, so thats where we started.

On my first Voodoo amp, I was getting this by using certain pre amp tubes, and power tubes. Once he did the mod on the second V-plex, my tube selection was too much, causing the low end to get too loose.

What I did like about the new power tubes is, they had a better high end. So I was able to get the thump I wanted by using the TungSol EL34B power tubes, instead of using EL34-LS tubes and this gave me better top end. Win win for me. Got the exact sound I was after, new power tubes are cheaper, and are more reliable, plus the change gave me a touch more gain.

The secret to Angus' tone is the wireless system he used - it added compression and gain.  Google 'SoloDallas' for a guy making repro units, he has demos that show the effect of the wireless Angus used - its all there soon as the unit is switched in.

From what I can gather, a boost and compressor pedal would get you most of the way there if you want to experiment.

Alternatively, he's gonna be offering a pedal version just so you can cop the tone.  I'll be having one myself, sounds great and with a plexi its instant Angus tone.

Solo Dallas Nails the tone for sure.... As much as I love it, I'm not trying to get it exact. I like the tone of both of them together, but also prefer more bottom in my personal tone. To be truthful, no ones tone on record is "IT" for me. This would be the reason for having a great amp tech like Trace working on my gear. I've been chasing the dragon with tone since the 80s, when Paul Rivera worked on my Marshall's. The Voodoo's are the closest I've ever been with an amp.

I'm after the tone heard on AC/DCs Night Prowler, with a touch of VH II beautiful girls, with more low end.  That is heaven to me...... With my Voodoo V-plex's and Trace tweaking them, I'm just about there....

Create your own sound in the ballpark you like. Would be good enough for me.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Thats "EXACTLY" it....... I was looking for something in the same ballpark, but with this, and a little of this, and this......... It gave the amp tech (Trace) an idea of where I was coming from. Since music and tone are so subjective, when working with a amp tech, the better you can get your ideas across, the more likely you'll like the mod when its done. :band5:

I agree with you there. There are little things I love about each records tone that I would kinda frankenstein into my own tone. Hard to pick just one.

I also own a Voodoo V-Plex and I love it. If you really want to make that thing sing, call Trace and ask about the Badgerplex Pre that he modifies for a pretty affordable price. It replicates the preamp section from the old tube Echoplexes from back in the day. It pushed mine into some major tonal sweetness!
