PU for a custom Kramer Baretta
« on: March 25, 2013, 04:57:57 PM »
Hi everyone,
I had a good friend of mine build me a custom guitar a while back modeled after a Kramer baretta. It's got a mahogany body and a maple neck. Only one pickup in the bridge position, floyd rose original etc. It's a really superb guitar, but the sounds I get from the pickup leave me wanting more. Right now it has a duncan '59 SH-1 in it, and while I think the pickup sounds great in lower gain situations for classic Led Zeppelin style rock, I really wanted the guitar to be more of a metal axe. I've been looking a lot at the VHII and Black Dog as they seem like they would be excellent replacements that fall ore into the "classic metal" niche. If anyone has any opinions for me between these two, or any other PU suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thanks! :D

The VHII is quite focussed, dry, noncompressed and touchsensitive. Feels quite hot. I love how this pickup screams with some good ampoverdrive. It has a clear topend, but not shrill.
The BD has more mids then say a Mule, and a rounder topend. From what I heard and read here on the forum it sounds a bit more polite and it growls more then it screams. But again, I have only experience with the VHII.
Both will do for some metalstyles, they're are just voiced differently.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I think a Rebel Yell or a Holydiver would work great in that axe.
