« on: April 27, 2013, 10:45:26 PM »
Buy a 610-Mk2 valve preamp and get a UAD-2 Duo DSP accelerator free

That's a £1k bit of studio kit thrown in for nothing!

Oh dear more ££

And the LA-610 is a really nice studio channel.  It's excellent for vocals.
So many pickups, so little time

It looks like a good deal but I would be a right mug if dropped £1300 odd on this right now! I'm still learning mic placement and signal chain things. I'm sure they make a bigger difference in terms of improving your sound than a mic pre. It does look tempting though. I want a MacBook Pro so I can go mobile! I'm seeing opportunities to record and make a few £ all around me these days. :-)

Johnny, it's so easy to get caught up in the equipment rat-race, and it's so not necessary. My recordings sound vastly different over the past 4 years, not because I keep buying new gear, but because I kept practicing and working on improving my technique and methods. There have been plenty of blindfold tests done with various microphone preamplifiers, and it's VERY hard to hear the differences [if any actually exist] once something is recorded.

You are absolutely right; 1 microphone, well placed, will sound better than 100 that are set up incorrectly.

Very well put!

It's easy to get carried away and wanting to buy new gear to keep improving. I haven't bought new recording equipment for quite some time. My gear is pretty simple and cheap and I have nowhere near exploring my gears limits.
