Stormy Monday or Mule in a strat bridge position?
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:16:49 PM »
I'm in the process of assembling a strat from warmoth parts and was hoping of using a bridge humbucker which would compliment the '63 veneer boards that I plan to purchase. In short, I'm looking for a pickup which will handle everything from BB King-esque blues, to jazz, to funk, to classic rock (Zeppelin, Cream, Hendrix etc) and even harder rock such as Van Halen. Would the Mule or 'Stormy Monday' pickups compliment the alder body/maple neck strat I am building for a low output, vintage sound - or would a higher output pickup be more apt?... if so, any recommendations?

Thank you

Personally I feel a Mule is in general better at it's place in a mahogany based guitar. For strats I like a little more beef, especially with a maple neck. For classic rock I would look along the lines of Black Dog, Abraxas and Crawler.

I have a VHII/Mothers Milk-combo in ash Fender American Series and a swampash MXG Custom strat (made by Patrick Eggle) loaded with a Crawler and Irish Tours. The latter set is the beefier, allround set. Crawler splits great too, good quack with the middle IT. Splitted the Crawler itself sounds like meaty telepickup. I have it wired that I can use full Crawler also with the middle-IT.

The Crawler isn't that hot, despite it's dc-resistance. Not (much) hotter then my VHII. It has a more vintagehot feel and still enough PAF-character. High notes keep it's weight, and this pickup really growls when pushed.
The Abraxas is in the same ballpark, with a bit more chime in the topend. Sort of hotrodded Mule.
Both work fine a strat, and provide a balanced split.
I don't know anything how a Black Dog performs in strats. It's usually not the first choice for strats here on the forum.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.
