Which speaker for the following contraption?
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:33:23 PM »
Hi Guys, i've revived an old contraption of mine, and now am looking for the proper speaker to make the whole thing really shine.

basically, it's an ada mp-1 guitar preamp modded to sound closer to a soldano than the original JMP-like sound, which goes into an Epiphone Valve junior converted into a poweramp (both gain stages are paralleled).

currently i have the eminence lady luck, which sounds a bit too bright for my tastes, and at 75 watts i think it's too stiff for the 5w that the single EL84 Valve junior gives.

i was looking at the WGS speakers green beret, 25 watts http://wgs4.com/content/gb, though i've tried my "amp" into a celestion lynchback and it sounds great too... any options? i've really to stamp that "recto" like sound on this little baby with the speaker as the finishing touch.

thanks!

C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

If the Recto sound is your goal, you should definitely look into a V30; also, you should be using a closed back cabinet ...

the mesa c90 black shadow really works for thickening things up in small cabinets
it's a huge sounding speaker and I liked it way better than the 5 v30's I had in my cheap 1x12
the celestion classic 80 is supposed to be very close to it
the g12k100 and the old g12k85 seem like great alternative options as well
not a fan of the v30 honk in small cabinets, although I love them in 4x12's

which mod did you have done to the MP1?

Mod3.1?

I've had enough mods myself  and ended up keeping only the Superstock mod

yeah it's mod 3.1, i really need to change the valves in there, being a veteran MP-1 user, what do you recommend? currently it has sovteks in there, sounds fine, but they've been there a while and it's due for a refresh.

i have a hankering to put it back into stock, but honestly this unit has been messed with enough times for me to leave it alone, just the fact that it's paired with my VJ poweramp gives it a life of its own anyway so i like that "unique" character :)

classic lead is probably worth a shot, as eric says- they're pretty chunky-sounding and sound pretty big in 1x12s.

a texas heat (or even swamp thang) might be worth a try too if it's not too american-sounding.

I haven't tried the preamps in question, though, so bear that in mind.

I tended to use sovteks or EH or whatever GrooveTubes I had around.

If going back to stock try the superstock board - really good and improves sound quality

I see that he does a ready to drop in Mod3.1 too and that the ADAdepot is back up

yeah i was eyeing one of these boards yesterday, though i can do my own mods, so i'm just tempted by laziness!!

what are your feelings on the 3 tube mod? worth the ticket? currently my mod 3.1 mp-1 has enough gain for me, but there's something i don't like about the EQ, so that's why i was considering going back to stock...

I had the 3tm and the Mod4mk2 and they were ok but there was just too much gain in the end for me and it lost much of wat I used to love about the MP1

The earliest MP1s were a little different tonally - more like an old plexi - I regret letting my oldest one go.
The later tone was trying to cater for more thrashy type stuff

the Superstock mod is the one I ended up liking most and I also swapped out the resistor that governs the frequency centre of the bass control to a trimpot and tweaked it a little to make it just a touch more Marshally. I think I took the bass frequency down from 120hz to about 90hz, just seemed to suit me better
there is some instructions on doing that in the Mod3.666.

Ok I have pretty much moved over to the Egnater stuff but my ADA trip was a long one

How is this for overkill:

nice rack!

the only thing that irks me about the mp1 is the volume/gain drop between preset changes that have lower/higher gain/saturation, makes it great for studio use but a no-no for live. i can't decide if i like the recto tone as i've had mine for years and don't remember what it sounded like!!

mine also has a bit of a temper, yesterday the front panel stopped working. i turned it off and let it cool down and it was working again. the other day it just wouldn't turn on, then all of a sudden it did. i figure let's play it while it's still alive!

Holy cow! I would get stagenightmares with all these knobs. Waaaay to complicated for me (probably it isn't that difficult, but it looks like this).

it's easy really - it's like having 16 amps each with their own gain/bass/mid/treble/volume
