Mississippi queen or nailbomb?
« on: February 07, 2013, 04:19:05 AM »
Having a bit of a think about what pickups to put in my guitar it's a yamaha pacifica 120s (so basically a tele shape with double humbuckers) I just spent some time replacing the nut, saddles and machine heads and it's come down to which pickups to choose first off I was thinking of putting a nailbomb in at the brodge for some heavy distorted riff work and a mississippi queen in the neck for some versatility. But then I thought about putting the mississippi queen in both the neck and bridge positions and find I can't easily decide which is the best combination? I'd say my playing style is somewhere between metal and hard rock, going from riffing with heavy distortion or fuzz to occasionally dialling back to some light to medium crunch melodic work.

Any advice that anyone could give me would be really appreciated as it's driving me mad which decision to go with.

Just my 2 cents:

You really can't go wrong with anything from Bare Knuckle. That being said, I don't know if the Mississipi Queen would be able handle everything you'd want it to do in the bridge. I'll admit to having never played it in a bridge position of a guitar so take this with a grain of salt but in the neck this pickup sounds very much like what it is: a single coil. Great for high gain leads? Absolutely. But I'm not sure it'd give the most inspiring riffing tones. I'd say go with the Nailbomb for the bridge OR consider looking into the Stockholm if you want to try p90-types in both positions. I play everything from death metal to jazz and country and my Stockholm/Mississipi Queen set has been amazing for all of it. Keep in mind you will have hum to deal with with any single coil but honestly a good noise gate makes that basically irrelevant.

Depends on your amp. MQ and highgainamp could work very nice. I would consider the Holy Diver too though.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I picked up one of these quite recently and have had a similar dilemma.

For the absolute piitance I paid for it, I couldn't refuse, but I have wondered about how to soup it up a bit.

The old Yamaha pickups were a bit tame.

I feel it could make a nice "faux-cabronita" so I started with some hotter HBs and some cheap H style covers.

But now I'm thinking about putting a pair or HB sized P90s even.

These early Yams are good modding bases IMO.

If you are worried that the A-Bomb might be 'a bit much' you could always go for the Rebel Yell bridge.  It would probably be a good match up for the MQ.  Otherwise you could try Stockholm/A-Bomb if you want to go 'over the top' ... a pair of Stockholms could also be nice, or a pair of MQs.  Apparently some people have had the Supermassive made in HB size ... it is a little milder in output compared to the Stockholm
