Crawler v Hoy Diver for Joan Jett Gibson
« on: October 10, 2013, 07:56:52 AM »
Trying to decide between HD & Crawler to replace the burstbucker in Joan Jett Gibson, after more mids, more of a snarl / kick, sort of hot rodded Jb sound, but with more warmth and versatility. Playing through Blackstar HT5, play most 80's & 90's metal and blues. Rebel Yell also considering, if this would suit better. Every BK pick sounds awesome, confusing myself immensely lol

Hi and welcome.

For what you want I would suggest the HD over the Crawler. That kick should be more present there. Plus one of the descriptions given is "a better JB" in the sense that it takes all the good qualitys of the JB and leaves the bad ones behind. It still is a PU on its own, donīt expect a JB copy or something, but it delivers to similar tastes.
Style whise you should be right at home too, spot on.

The Crawler is cool too, but the HD does the metal side better and more of that kick.

RY should not be discounted either, but it is a very different voicing and not as JBish.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Another vote for the HD. Compared to the Crawler it is tighter in the bass and overall more modern (=80s) sounding. The Crawler, while being hot and compressed, has a distinct vintage flavor to it (=60s/70s ish). Outputs are roughly the same.

Cheers Stephan

Yeah every BKP is great in its own way and for each given style there are multiple ones that do that well, but all in different ways. Put on top of that matching it to a guitar and you got a sh*tload of options.

Please do come back to us with your findings, maybe even write up a review if you can be bothered. It would be much apprechiated.

I think both will do, but the HD has a tigther lowend, which you want for metal.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

No dramas to write a review at all, I am sure it will be a HUGE improvement over the Burstbucker 3, thank you for your time to reply, it is greatly appreciated.

The Crawler is an awesome pickup and the more I play it, the more I like it but I think for your application the Holydiver is the right call.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite
