A-Pig in Jackson RR1
« on: October 24, 2013, 04:02:42 AM »
Got some clips recorded of my new A-pig in my RR1. Also have before clips from when it had the EMG 81 wired at 18v.

Signal path: Garbage playing -> Guitar -> Marshall 2203KK ->Vader 4x12 -> SM57 -> Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 -> Reaper on Laptop.

Tuning on the EMG clips was E standard while on the BKP it's C#. Kinda screws with the comparison but still interesting I suppose. Amp settings, Reaper EQ, mic placement, etc were all about the same however. The doom leaning samples have left and right tracks while both thrash samples have just one track.

Nice clips.

Doesn't sound that different from the A-Pig in my Explorer in C# standard, although I never attempted to play any of those kind of thrash riffs through it.  When I have mine back in one piece (I'm still doing all the wiring uopgrades and shielding, but the harness should arrive today so that I can take it to a tech to install the triple shots next week) I'll give some thrash a go.  I mainly played crust, doom, and old school death metal on it before

The EMGs are certainly more trebly; part of that could be due to the tuning difference but it seems to be more a result of the pickups

Yeah I'm mostly in the doom area with what I write as well. A lot of black metal influence too though.

You're definitely not wrong about it being more than the tuning. It was a (pleasant) surprise how much of a difference was immediately clear. The thing that I'm really happy about that might not come across with a recording is how it feels like the swap helped tame some of the issues I have with the Vader. Maybe it's just in my head, but it just sounds so much better all around. Still need to tweak the amp and dial it in for the A-pig.

I find that the A-Pigs tame some of the issues I have with my Peavey/Orange combination too, compared to the other BKPs I've owned, which have been less bassy.

The pickup I have that has the most issues with my Peavey is the stock Gibson P-90 in my SG Junior, mainly because it is a trebly, noisy pickup, but swapping it out for the much bassier BKP Stockholm P-90 and shielding the cavities should tame most of those screeching and feedback issues
