How much like actives are Black Hawks output wise?
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:29:12 PM »
Hello

I am in need of a little guidance in regards to replacing a pair of pickups in my main axe. I have an ESP LTD MH-1000 with a mahogany body and neck, and a rosewood fretboard. It was born with a set of EMG-81, which I recently took out, because I didn't like that cold and "always turned to 11"-kind of compression that they delivered, which pushed the front end of my Orange TH100 so hard, that I struggled to get a clean tone out of it (not being in the habit of using the volume knob on my guitar...)

I then replaced the actives with a set of passives from a competing brand, which, due to less than stellar quality control, started to rust within a month of installing them. After some back and forth via e-mail, I have finally convinced them to reimburse me for the pickups, and now I want to install a set of Black Hawks, mainly due the audio clips I've heard on the website, the description of them, the hype surrounding them and the bitchin' looks of those twin blades on each coil.

I do have doubts, though... The Black Hawks are noted with a DC resistance more in the vintage vein of pickups, kind of the same DC resistance as a set of Gibson '57 Classics - which is more the kind of output that I'm going for, but BKP claims that they have "all the power and clarity of an active", which makes me wonder whether they will push the front end of my amp as hard as a set of EMG's? Is it wrong to use DC resistance as the only measurement of how much output is in a pickup?

I guess it sounds a bit confusing, since I'm asking about contemporary output pickups, but at the same time I am concerned about the level of output... I don't want a 16KΩ output like a Seymour Duncan SH-4, since that pickups is too shrill for my taste, but I'm not going for the Gibson '57 Classic sound, even though it is über classic rock n' roll... Something modern, with a decent output, that will give me that Stephen Carpenter chug and still allow me to get crystal clean tones from my amp.

Would they suit my guitars tonewoods overall? I play a sort of alternative metal, inspired by Deftones, Tool, APC, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains...

Kind regards,
Jesper

Black hawks to my ears are emg's without the batteries but I only had the alnico bridge so in fairness it was a little warmer than an 81 in a good way but it still sounded like an emg which is great imo.

Im looking to get a new guitar strictly for metal and im sure im going to end up putting black hawks in them but I just couldnt be bothered with the guitar I put them in but with the black hawk it was the best it ever sounded.

Not versatile in my experience just very very metal!

Clinical, tight, heavy and cutting perfect for deftones type stuff for sure less so soundgarden and aic but it would do the job unless you were really anal.

I have a cermaic blackhawk and I'd say the DC resitance is very misleading. I think  they are high output for sure

I put them up there with the hotter BKP's i've tried.Apig, Abomb , miracle man
Maton- jazz/JB
Cole Clark -NB Neck ,  Apig
Mayones Setius - Juggs
Et Guitars Katana 7 -Juggs
Mesa Dual Rect
and more stuff
