P-90 hum
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:55:51 PM »
Any hints on reducing hum in a single P-90?

Does shielding help at all?  I have some shielding paint.

Obviously ordering a pickup in RWRP would have no effect, as there is only one pickup, just as the effect is lost on a two pickup guitar unless you use both at once.  Hopefully people have some ideas.

I have an ISP Decimator II G-String but because the hum comes from the guitar itself the pedal decides it's cool and doesn't suppress it.

I'm seriously considering an EHX Hum Debugger, maybe as the first pedal in my effects loop and mounting it on top of my amp

Shielding may help a bit but the majority of hum comes through the pickup itself. IME P90s are the worst offenders in that regard, because they have more turns and output than Tele or Strat pickups. Furthermore, consider the context in which these pickups are played - whereas Strat and Tele pickups are often played rather cleanly, P90s are often used in far gainier environments. Sorry but I am afraid I am not of much help here.

Cheers Stephan

Ha ha ... well, I'm playing d-beat punk through a Peavey tube head, probably the situation most likely to cause the issue!!  Not forgetting either that the Stockholm is one of the highest output P-90s around.  I might give one of those EHX Hum Debuggers a shot
