New Priest album not that bad..

The first half of the album is... turgid at best.
Then just as I wrote it off the second half gets pretty lively/good.

Not listened to the bonus tracks yet, I don't have high hopes for them, but you never know.

I would say start listening with "Hell and Back".

Overall I find the sound too detuned for Priest. I guess they did it so Rob could keep up.

If ever a thread title could be described as "damning with faint praise"!!

I must admit I'd forgotten it was out.  I suppose I should buy it, since I recently bought the box set with all the other albums.*

"Not that bad"? hehe

Just read the linked review (and its comments to-date). Over all, it sounds like I might possibly appreciate the 2nd half and some of the extras. Not sure whether this is enough to make me get off my @rse and obtain a copy, though... :undecided:

(Too busy sitting on my @rse waiting for my Queen at the Rainbow stuff to arrive - WHY DID NO-ONE TELL ME IT WAS ALREADY RELEASED?!!!)

I fell asleep listening to the first few tracks last night - not because it was dull, but it was very late at night.

Sounded OK, if not hugely exciting.  Lots of lead guitar, presumably featuring new boy Richie.  "Sword of Damocles" reminded me of some of the more epic, melodic latterday Iron Maiden songs.  But it was just a first listen.

yes, some of the songs are a bit maiden-ish.

agree there is some very flashy lead work too.

with nostradamus i thought there was maybe four /excellent/ tracks on there with 1 1/2 CDs of filler. on this album i would say theres maybe seven /good/ tracks with 1/2 CD of filler. i don't know which i prefer..

i did think angel of retribution was far better than both of the last two efforts.

Priest are nearly done I guess :/

Initially underwhelmed but I'm liking it at the moment, some nice bluesy touches along with the leads... nothing jumps out as "Wow" but I tend to find that albums that grow on me tend to end up firm favorites.

Only time will tell.

Ah! Mrs R's favourite  (no, seriously, she thought it was the only good bit... she was quite sorry they didn't play it...)
