White/Green wires swapped for Black/Bare
« on: December 02, 2014, 03:19:45 AM »
Hey guys,

I've given my guitar to a friend over the weekend for him to install a Warpig pickup in the bridge position as per this diagram.

https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/humbuckers/2_hum__2_vol__2_tone__4_con__3_way_toggle.pdf

I've just opened it up to realise that he has soldered the green/white wires where the black/bare wires are meant to be soldered.
The red wire is soldered correctly.
The black/bare wire have been soldered together and taped off to the side.
The pick up appears to be working fine.

I was just wondering, what is actually happening here? Is the pickup working to it's full potential? could this cause damage or is this bad? Is it necessary to rewire the guitar so that the black/bare are soldered to the ground and the green/white are unsoldered and taped together?

Assuming the coils of the pickup are wired correctly, the way the pickup is wired to the circuitry means it should work as a single coil.

Does it hum more than when you use the other pickup on the guitar (or if it's a single pickup guitar, more than other humbucker equipped guitars)? If so, there you go.

A quick measurement with a digital multimeter would clarify the situation.

Cheers Stephan

Yup - he's wired it as a single coil
Swapping the green/White and black plain will give you the full power of the pickup.
Also worth taping off the green /white too to keep it out of harms way.

Also make sure the green and white are actually soldered together and not just twisted
