the dogs vs. the divers. ec1000
« on: March 07, 2015, 07:23:56 PM »
Im changing my ec 1000s bridge pickup.
I have the rosewood board with the jb/59.
I'm thinking either a bareknuckle black dog or holy diver.
It will be my main recording guitar
For stuff all the way from paramore/artifex pereo/emarosa/circa survive & a little heavier too(dance gavin dance, a day to remember,Memphis may fire) any suggestions
thanks in advance

Someone also suggested the nail bombs to me so there's that too.

The Holydiver is the best all rounder of the 3 you mentioned. The NB is modern sounding and needs a LP type guitar to sound full enough.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

I had the Holy Diver for a while and its low end didn't really do it for me, it just didn't have the "chunk" I wanted. Too smooth and elegant. Depending on your taste that might be positive or negative.

Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

HD and BD are very similar in overall voicing imho. Between those two it comes down to how 'open' and dynamic compared to compressed and smooth you like your pickups to feel. The BD is lower output and so feels a bit more open and maybe has a bit more low mids and bass, the HD is a touch more compressed and smooth. But they are very close to each other. The NB is more angry, hairier high frequencies, more high mids and cuts through more, some people love it, for me it wasn't fat and warm enough, so I prefer the other two. I think that the BD is my favourite bridge BKP, with the HD very close to it, although obviously it all depends on the guitar and your setup, etc :)
Bridge: (A)Pig, HD, Jugg, PK, (A)NB, Crawler, Aftermath, RY, Abraxas, Emerald, BD, VHII, RR, Cobra, Sinner, Trilogy, Stockholm, Supermassive.
Neck: IT, SM, CS, Trilogy, Emerald, Cobra, Blue note.

Yes they have similar voicings, but in mahogany LP style guitars I much prefer the black dog. It's just more chunky and open, and with a ton of gain, sounds close to the diver anyway for fluid soloing.

Well I'm about to have a Black Dog/Mule combo fitted into my Full Thickness ESP Eclipse, and a Holy Diver/Emerald combo fitted in my custom shop, standard thickness ESP Eclipse with Floyd Rose, so I'll let you know how I get on :)
