jaguar w.bareknuckles
« on: May 30, 2015, 06:25:40 PM »
i just purchased a fender jaguar hh.
i plan on putting a bkp in the bridge. i was reccomended the nailbombs from ben which i think is a good choice but im also interested in the holy divers because they're supposed to be like the jb in a way and i like the jb alot.
anyone have any input they could share to help me make up my mind?
im going for almost a alternative/ post hardcore tone
something along these lines

the body is alder, it has a short 24 scale. it would be played through a orange th 100/ marshall jvm
thanks in advance

In the spirit of not helping I will bring in something...which is to be taken with a pinch of salt, since I am not familiar with how that kind of guitar with HH sounds. However: The Nailbomb can achieve the sound of the second song I think (first one not available for me), but with an Orange there is a chance of getting into the hairy area. The HD avoids that and can do that sound too, together with an orange, and withc what I can only assume to be a brighter axe, this might be the safer choice. Finally, since you reference the JB I must incite the old debate as to which BKP has which JB character (old vs new JB) once again by mentioning the RY, which should be able to do that sound very well too. Furthermore that one is kind of the little brother of the Nailbomb, so that can work.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

Thank you very much! The marshall is my main amp but something about the nail bombs turns me away from them an im not sure what it is. So rebel yell or holydiver should be right for me.
I also play like indie and coil split would both of those be okay

Again, without triggering the JB debate: the JB is my favourite pickup and found the HD a massive let down. There is very little I like about it.
Nothing sounds like a Skyline GTR ...... but BKP comes close!

The alnico version of the Nailbomb could be a good choice here.

An alternative would be the Stockholm HSP-90.  Around the same output, and definitely suited for those sounds, and doesn't tend toward 'hairiness' in the same way as the A-Bomb.

It depends on what you look for in a JB. My reference is Warren Dimartini. Plenty (loads) of high mid growl and a harmonic rich top end. The low end definition is less important. Older JB's in the high 13 / low 14k range which sound great clean on full volume is my ideal. The HD does have the harmonic rich top but is overwound too compressed with a muddy low mid voicing. The RY has the higher mids and good harmonics but it prefers a Les Paul. I can't get it to work in a superstrat.

Hopefully littleredguitars2 can say something himself, but check out this video.

Also, I tend to think that the RY will be too bright for your guitar

Oddly, I've always found the Nailbomb brighter than the Rebel Yell - in terms of its bright, cutting edge. With reference to your YouTube clips, having Nailbombs, Rebel Yells, VH2s and Crawlers (and having had Mules in the past), I'd say the sound is more Nailbomb than Rebel Yell.

Ahhhh. I'm so torn between the HD and the alnico nailbombs.
The jag is bright, and is alder.so I'm thinking the HD would accept it better maybe or would it ? The guy who owns the axe palac suggested those to me. An another guy told me the nail bombs more mahogany friendly and the HD more alder friendly.I don't know what it is about the nail bombs but in all the clips on YouTube I think i preferred the hd, but almost everyone's suggested it
I actually have a brand new supermassive going into a fender 72 deluxe. If i could coil split it I'd probably have it in there.

You gave the answer already. In this particular guitar the NB could cut a bit too much.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

The RY is definitely more like the de Martini tone than the Holydiver. Holydiver is more like Jake E. Lee. RY loves/needs a guitar with substance in the low end whereas the HD sits better in brighter guitars.
Of course, that's how I hear them and speaking of bridge pickups only. With the respective neck pickups it's the other way round - the HD neck is brighter than the RY neck.

Cheers Stephan

...but having said that, most guitars have passive tone controls where the amount of top end can only be turned down and not up, so maybe it's not always a bad thing to have it too bright - you can always turn the tone down a bit whilst keeping something in reserve should you ever need it.
