I have no idea where the inspiration from this one came from, but it's the last of the songs I'm writing with the Bare Knuckle Abraxas and MM for a bit.  Once I get  the guitar with the Crawler/63 put back together, I'll be picking up writing with that new inspiration.

Crawler - Solos + Chorus texture
Abraxas - Rhythm
Mother's Milk (Neck) - Rhythm Verse

Clean recording, clean playing. I like your hooks and dig your sound. Great stuff again and a good benchmark for anyone who's interested in the Abraxas and Crawler.

Thanks man.

I have the Abraxas back in the tele. It's split sounds are just unmatched. Very authentic tones. Gonna end up selling the crawler, which I still like a lot, but I can't be in a situation where I'm not able to access the tones I love - even in my #2 guitar. I've finally found my sound.

Frank, just to be clear - you were thinking of letting the Abraxas take a back seat in favour of the Crawler but you've changed your mind ? I can understand that. My Bernie with the Abraxas set has almost certainly taken over the number one spot but I still love the (very different) sound of my Firebird with RYs. At gigs I've never changed guitars unless I broke a string but now I'm thinking of them letting them have a set each. What is your number 1 guitar ?

Cheers, Richie.

Hey, Richie.

It wasn't about replacing, just having a different tone to work with.  When I loaded the Crawler into my #1 (Mahogany/Maple HxS Tele), I found myself missing the less compressed (more expressive) tones of the Abraxas.  Knowing it was in my other guitar, which wasn't as fun to play wore me down.  I felt as though I was settling, which is a harsh way to phrase things, but I've come to accept that of all the BK HBs I've owned (Abraxas, Crawler, Holy Diver), the Abraxas just nails it every time.  I can do everything from metal to country with this thing - and convincingly.  It's a really special pickup in that way.

That said, the only other pickup that has be curious in the least is the VHII.  I understand it's fairly uncompressed and splits into a bright, twangy tone.  I've heard some say the Crawler splits beautifully, but in my experience the Abraxas is leaps and bounds above it for split tones.  The Crawler doesn't lose any midrange when split.  The Abraxas gains added sparkle, loses some mids, and picks up a nice twang when split.  I really dig it.

If I really didn't enjoy using split tones, then I'd still love the Abraxas, but would have kept the Crawler in my #2.  That pickup has some gorgeous lead tones under the hood.  I'd love to play a RY, as well.  BK just has an outstanding array of models.

I'm in the process of putting together another guitar, which will hopefully outshine my #1, which I just adore.  It's already got an Abraxas and 2 63 Veneer waiting for her :).

Best -

Good luck with the new build. I'm looking forward to hearing some clips. I'm done buying pickups for a while - I've got two great sounding, great playing guitars which is all I need for gigs. I haven't had a Tele in years but I'd really like to get another some day - might trade my Strat that I never play.

Thanks, my man.  I hope to be done building soon lol.  Will have some new songs up soon.  Been occupied with a new amp build that's running parallel to the guitar haha.

I can see your preference. Crawler in mahogany can be less expressive than a Mule or the Abraxas. It's also so much related to the amp in use, the gainsettings, the playingstyle. We all have to find out what fits our needs. Like, I'm totally in love with Mules in my mahogany tele-hybrid. So open and dynamic. I use this guitar for different music than my strat and tele.

Good luck with the new build!

I tell you this - the Crawler is a FUN pickup to play.  If I'd have tried it before the Abraxas, I don't think I would have spent any more money on pickups.

True the Crawler is a good pickup, but not in every guitar. Sometimes a guitar and a pickup come together in such a magic way that it opens totally new horizons. I think you had that moment with the Abraxas in that particular guitar.
