Single Coil In a George Lynch all Maple Guitar !
« on: September 08, 2015, 05:03:15 PM »
Hi guys !

I recently bought an ESP George Lynch M1 Tiger   ( http://www.espguitars.com/products/9412-m-1-tiger?category_id=1963402-george-lynch ) . It is an awesome guitar, very resonant , not heavy ( i think it's not as thick as a strat ) and very easy to play . The bad thing is that it has only a bridge pickup , so it is not very versatile .

I'm thinking to drill it and install a single coil neck pickup . From what i read here , the Slow Hand seems the best option , but i am also consider the Trilogy . The main goal is to get a neck w splitted bridge position that will be good for strat/funk style rhytm , and the neck by itself to be as dark as posibile . I had an Irish Tour in a strat and they were awesome , but the strat was Alder ..

The trilogy seems good but quite powerfull though . My bridge PU is 10 K ! ( http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/screamin-demonn

Thanks !

ALex !

What is your tonal goal here? Cause depending on that different bridge pickup with the right wiring (split, out of phase, series / parallel) could get you further than you think. IŽd consider that too. A Crawler for example would probably do brilliantly well, should it fit your style that is.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n
On the sidelines: Stockholm b / Suppermassive n, Mule n, AM set, IT mid

I am satisfied with my Bridge Pickup . I want to use the Single coil with the split bridge pos , to get some strat / tele combination that will allow me to use this guitar other than hard rock .

Fair enough. I think it is a great option, but your call. After all you know what you want better than I do. =)

In that case then I would indeed go towards the Slowhand as it is a little darker than the IT. Together with a split bridge it should be able to produce some great tones. The Trilogy would probably be too much for what you are after here. Should it still be too bright that can be easily fixed with some wiring though by adding a resistor. That makes the IT a viable option too should you want less mids.

I still recommend a change to the wiring though in adding a push pull to switch the neck + split position from series to parallel. That extra bit of versatility is something I recon youŽd like.

It's your call, but I wouldn't rout a $5000+ guitar to fit a neck pickup

I would probably just fit a bigger pickup like a Miracle Man in the bridge and either fit a push-pull or a SD Triple Shot switching pickup ring.  This guitar would use the flat Triple Shot so you could mount it with the switches at the bottom if you wished. That would give you a lot of versatility.  Sounds like you want to go dark though so maybe a Warpig ...

I don't know but don't discount the sinner neck pickups.  I'm sure it'll be the darkest of all the single coil necks but it retains a single coil vibe.  I've owned a sinner set in a strat and have a sinner neck in my George Lynch strat (Alder).  I love em hands down my fave single coils for all (my) applications.

+1. You're going to seriously devalue the thing, and if you don't like the results you're pretty much SOL.

I wouldn't change the stock pickup, either. It seems to have a handwound Arcane pickup designed specifically for George Lynch- I'm guessing it's pretty good.

Let me put it this way: if I was looking for a M1 Tiger I would definitely avoid one that had been routed.  If the electricals had been changed I would expect to be given the original electricals with it in a nice zip lock bag.

or at least go with a p/p pot on the existing pickup for a split tone before routing out an expensive piece of lumber.  sounds like one of the other guitar models might have been a better fit.
