The mule for heavier styles ?

so my 6 string setius came with the JB/Jazz combo . swapped it for a jugg set which I still really like but I've gone from drop C to drop D and even standard with that guitar so I don't feel the juggs are quite what when tuned higher  so selling em

I like the jazz and don't mind the JB but while do-able the jb isn't a keeper to me

reading up on pick ups and keen to try something from BKP that I haven't tired before . I've owned a bunch of the modern models so looking the the hot vintage or even the vintage and the mule has caught my eye. decent but not super overwhelming bass and mids and some nice cut in the treble .

This year I have moved to an axe fx ove rmy recto and I don't really see the point of high gain pick ups with the axe fx where its so easy to boost in the preset anyway

music i play with this guitar isnt super heavy. a mix of clean and high gain stuff along the lines of perfect circle ,incubus or tool

anyone using The Mule for heavier stuff ?

The Mule been known as being able to do Ozzy type heavy. The master, Tim, himself uses it for that. For a bit more the Abraxxas is something to look at. In essence a beefed up mule. More output, little less high end, more mids and more bass. Still vintage at heart, fully doing classic rock and blues, but with more ability to handle high gain. Should have no issue with the music you play. Well except for maybe tool, but no pickup fully can get what that man creates, taking the best parts of multiple amps.

One up from there then would be the Holydiver. Classic hot rodded PAF. Often compared to the JB too. Definetly a choice to consider here as I can see it do those styles you name wonderfully too. Since it is 80s style it also is not a modern pickup. Warm at heart that one and great in something like a setius.

does the holy diver have the upper mid push of the JB or is it a bit nicer in the mids ? I'd like a touch nicer mids and a touch smoother  in the top than the JB

that was the thing about the Juggs that turned me off in  standard tuning. the  mids sounds that was great when tuned lower got a bit nasally and annoying when tuned up

The Mule is quite balanced from top to bottom. The Crawler has huge mids. The Abraxas sit between those two: more chime than the Crawler, less mids, less output. Where the Crawler can described as the uber-Mule, the Abraxas is the hotrodded version of the Mule. Same AIV-magnet, just a bit hotter and middier and a tad less open.

It is a bit smoother for sure. The upper mid spike is shifted more towards mid and lower mids, giving it more of a roar. The high end is still present so that it cuts, but it is very musical. Also more open and detailed all around.

The upper mid spike character is more found in the Rebel Yell. Often compared to the old JB for it. Screaming rocking high mids, a top end comprised of harmonic overtones, and a punchy bottom end. Great in mahahony guitars. And even through its character still nicer in the way that it is more musical and harmonic than the JB.
