Most QUACKy Hot Vintage bridge humbucker?
« on: March 20, 2016, 06:50:12 AM »
Hi Everyone, This is my first time posting here as a member, so sorry if this had been asked before.

I had a superstrat with a black limba body/maple top and rosewood/ebony board. It came with a juggernaut bridge and riff raff neck. it was nice but im not that happy with the jugg bridge. i think it's a great modern/djent/prog pickup but, it was all it is good for in my opinion. It has almost no QUACK to it, it has bite sure, but there's no vocal to it, you know, quack... Output is too hot as well to clean up properly. Try to play a van halen, or Nuno's song with it, you'll know there's something missing. The older i get i seem to gravitate towards low to medium output pickups, as it has more character to it, more articulation, dynamic etc. It cleans up well too. Most of the time i play instrumental rock, shred, blues, rock, some metal, and djent occasionally, but mostly lead stuff.

So i was looking at the Black dog, as it seems to fit my preference and style, but recently i found nolly stating that riff raff is also great at being this 'underdog' that is great for low gain, subtle stuff, yet killer for metal too. Tim was advicing me for a riff raff too. But maybe users here can provide some insights?

back to the question though, i hear a lot of BKP demo ,either on youtube, or song files, but rarely it demonstrate this aspect that i'm looking for, quack! (to be honest,  either there was a LOT of bad demos, or DJENT playthroughs). In  my mind BKP seems to have this open voiced, clear sounding pickups, but i have a little doubt about the quack thing. So which do you think has more QUACK? Riff raff or black dog? or do you have any other suggestion? i'd like to keep it as low output as possible, don't want any more of high output pickup at the moment.

P.S: if you think my thread is too long, the title says it all really , but i want everyone understand where i'm coming from, i had fun writing it as well  CHEERS

What you want is a VHII: fantastic picking dynamics, but not whimpy in a superstrat. Van Halen? The VHII is the obvious choice.

Interesting, Tim was suggesting VHII as well, but for the basswood bodied ibanez that i have. Does it have enough thickness for the individual note? i got the impression that VHII is a bit thin for solos. although he mentions it has thicker bottom end for strat

The VHII is very clear and present, especially in the midhighs and highs. I would say not thin, but my Crawler is definitely fatter above the 12th fret. Different guitar though.

Well, I also think the VH2 will be an excellent choice. It definitely has some Fendery overtones due to the offset coils. Also it has good thick/richness as the drive builds up. Plus the clean tone is lovely due to the PAF wind. Dynamics and articulation are excellent too for the same reason.

Basswood, I don't know too much, but I think you'll be fine. Theres a clip on youtube with a VH2 in an agathis Hello Kitty Squier and it sounded simply brilliant.

The first vid is very VHii (through a greenback speaker. darker in comparison to my vid from earlier which is a vintage30 more mid barky and top)
The second sounds pretty Cold sweatty.
Of the two the VHii is the Quackiest Humbucker with sweet split sounds.

In comparison, what do think of riff raff and black dog? they seem to be a popular choice for those who likes low output without sacrificing power

Black Dog bridge is not what I hear as "quacky" - that would be the VHII bridge. No experience with the Riff Raff bridge.
