Suggestion on first set for 8-string
« on: June 13, 2016, 10:00:34 PM »
Hello all! Thanks in advance for any help in clearing up some options I am exploring:

Guitar: Carvin DC800 (8-String)
Tonewoods: Neck-thru - Walnut wings, Walnut/Maple 5 piece neck, Walnut top.

Problems: My tone is WAY too hot, I clip way too much etc.  Tone is dark and muddy (assuming the heavy/dense wood choice and the stock Carvin Active PUPs are responsible).

Goal: Bring down the hotness, clean up the low end and brighten the tone, get some mid range punch etc.  Playing styles and tones range from Metal and (forgive me plz) some djenty stuff a la Periphery etc. and clean jazzy stuff like Animals as Leaders (also the slappy/thumb thumping).  Some proggy stuff as well, Id love versatility as my styles to ebb and flow from day to day.

I was originally leaning towards to Juggernauts but talking to a friend who's owned like EVERY pickup from BKP and other brands, he swears by the Aftermath (bridge) and Coldsweat (neck) combo - and doing a coil-tap (push/pull pot) for the added range and options of single coil.  This seems like a great suggestion.  Ive read on here about other options from BKP but from time spent on this forum and SevenString.org it seems like AM/CS combo is very versatile.

LASTLY! There is currently no 8-string cover option, beyond sad. A recent email response from them includes a note about them being available in several months.  Am I correct in that if I order now, I am stuck between PUP rings or soapbar covers? Also, that you cannot simply add the covers later, I would have to reorder the PUPs completely?

Thoughts? Comments?

you might find the aftermath a little too immediate for your tastes if you're looking to play jazz.

The rebel yell as mentioned is hugely versatile. The coldsweat neck works great on these sorts of guitars.
If mud and high output is the real problem you're trying to solve I'd almost be inclined to recommend the cold sweat for the bridge too.
