HSP90: Mississippi Queen or Supermassive for Telecaster
« on: November 10, 2016, 09:24:37 PM »
Hi all,

What would you guys recommend for an Alder Telecaster bridge pickup: MQ or SuperMassive?
I play mostly Rock (Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters style), so it's mostly higher gain stuff.

Biggest difference I see in the graphs on the BK site is that the SuperMassive has a huge amount of bass, compared to the MQ.
I am leaning towards the MQ, for its versatility. I'm just a bit worried it will sound "thin".

Opinions are highly appreciated! :)

I have the Stockholm, and while it looks like it has a 'huge' amount of bass on the graph that is only by comparison with the MQ etc ... it is a pretty normal pickup really and still has a distinctively P-90 character.  The Supermassive would be somewhere in between.  I would guess that the Supermassive would be equivalent to a Cold Sweat (or maybe less) in terms of output and bottom end, the Stockholm is more in the Nailbomb ballpark.

Alright, thanks for the input - so basically more low-end but still versatile?

Anybody using an MQ for gain stuff?

People do use the MQ for gain stuff, especially in the neck position, but if you are wanting to do palm mute type stuff I would recommend a Stockholm or Supermassive.

There are some videos of the Stockholm and Supermassive made by forum member littleredguitars2 on youtube.

I can't comment that much on the bridge, but my middle supermassive (which is actually a neck one) doesn't sound that bassy. Not compared with my Nailbomb bridge at least. I'm guessing it's not gonna have LP levels of fatness if in a telecaster either. I love playing bluesy stuff on it too a lot of the time so it's like an extra fat single coil to me.

So not the best answer as I don't have direct comparison experience to the Stockholm or MQ, and it's a neck in a middle position, but I got it based on reading it retained more of a classic P-90 character than the hotter stockholm, but I still figured I wanted something pretty rocking so seemed like a good middle ground starting point. It's certainly not a one-trick 'heavy only' pickup in this guitar by a long stretch.
