NPD - Morley mini wah/volume
« on: January 10, 2017, 10:06:12 AM »
I wanted a volume pedal for swells and was looking at several. The thing is they are generally quite big. I got a bit confused with all the options - active/passive optical/potentiometer/magnetic etc etc.

So I had no idea what to buy. I liked the idea of the Morley mini pedals, since they are not really mini like a Mooer - in fact they are still full size pedals really, but not crazy big. I thought it could be a good compromise.

So a Morely mini wah/volume came up on the bay and even though I just wanted a volume I decided to go for it.

I don't like the wah sound particularly. Its fine, but it doesn't have the organic grit of my crybaby. Not my favourite wah sound, but just about acceptable.

The volume side of it is better I think. I couldn't detect any tone suck, and the pedal action is very smooth.

The taper however was not that smooth. I saw online that people open these Morley pedals up and play with the LED positions. I managed to get the taper pretty smooth in the end, and also managed to get the wah a little bit better with the same approach.

Overall:
+ robust enclosure
+ small, but not that small
+ smooth feel
+ no affect on tone
+ wah level control

- not great wah sound
- had to play with the LED positions to get decent tapers
- no minimum volume setting

I'm happy enough - its not the greatest pedal out there but its decent and fits to my needs. Feels like its built to last.

There are two pedals I have desperately needed: a sustain pedal for my synths, and a volume pedal. I finally got the sustain pedal, so who knows -- I may get a volume pedal one of these years soon lol. I want it so I can do Xanadu-like soloing. :)
