Black Keys fuzzsound
« on: March 20, 2017, 01:57:43 PM »
Hey guys,

as I already mentioned in a few other threads I really got into the Black Keys lately, so of course I've been thinking about covering some songs.

I have never really been a fan of Fuzz sounds since my main background back when I started playing guitar was the heavy and tight distortion driven Thrash metal sound, being a big Metallica fanboy as well as having my metalcore phase. To me Fuzz always sounded muddy and messy and I never gave it a second thought.

Now that I "matured" I still love my oldschool metal and a few modern bands here and there, but I have all the means to get there, slap a Tubescreamer as a boost in front of my DSL 100 and I'm good to go. I'd like to finally add a Fuzzpedal to my pedalboard though to get different sounds for more bluesrock oriented stuff. So the problem is: which one should I get?

These are the two songs by the Keys I enjoy the most regarding the fuzz sound, now I know I should go grab my guitar and test different pedals myself and all that shenanigans, however my time is a bit limited right now so I once again put my trust into this forum :)

Just as an additional info, would love to be able to cover some Queens of the Stone age as well. If you need more info, fire away!

Thanks in advance, cheers!

Hey Dave, yeah saw that one too, but I think I will order the ordinary Hoof to save me some space on my pedaltrain board I'll order as well from Thomann.

Really impressed by Earthquaker Devices, went on their website and saw their mini movie about the company. The love those people put into their work really makes me smile. Probably gonna order more stuff from them just because of that dedication, the Cloven Hoof sounds amazing as well:

not a fan at all, but I saw them at lollapalooza in 2013 and they had the best live fuzz sound I've ever heard
I believe they had a shin-ei FY-6 and a russian big muff
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

There is a pretty detailed and cool rig rundown to be found, quote "a vintage Shin-ei Companion fuzz with the FY-6 circuit for an added octave effect, a Rosac Nu Wa Fuzz wah pedal (only used for the fuzz) run into an MXR Ten Band EQ to replace the mids, and a vintage Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi"

Check out the video if you got the time: https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/21412-rig-rundown-the-black-keys-dan-auerbach-2014

EQD Hoof is ordered, a friend from the States is gonna bring it on the 20th of April, so I'll keep you updated on that. Should get me close since he has one of those on his pedalboard as well :)

Cheers
