Hotter pups for a P/J bass.

Hey all, long time no post!

Let's jump straight in shall we?

I've recently been thinking about my bass tone, I own a Squier Jaguar Bass (LS) which used to have actives in, but I hate batteries in guitars, so out they came. I replaced them with the Duncan Quarter Pounter P/J set, which does sound good, but I'd really like a hotter set.

The dream? If I could get a bass version of a Painkiller, that's what I'm into. Passive, but gutteral and ballsy, with a fair dollop of mid-focus.

Anyone know if this is even a thing? Is it physically possible to actually just re-create a Painkiller set but for Bass and have it in a P/J configuration?

If it is possible, I imagine I'd have to get something custom made anyway, which hopefully is where Tim and the guys come in.

Bare Knuckle's bass pickups are pretty much all vintage recreations.

If you want high output, aggressive bass pickups I would recommend Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups.

Yeah... those are what I have already. I was hoping there was something throatier and more aggressive around in the PJ config without having to go active. :/

Seymour Duncan make a Quarter Pound PJ set that is very aggressive. BKP don't get into that territory with their bass stuff.

Yeah, I know about the SD Quarter Pounders... Those are what I have already. Shame, BK might be missing a trick, there. If anyone can create a passive aggressive bass pup, it's them. :D They could call them "The Canadian" :p

I have an Audere active preamp with my Jazz QPs.  Probably the most aggressive sounding bass out there.  Needs a battery box though, having it routed for a Gotoh BB-04 battery box soon.  Removing the preamp to change batteries is a pain.

Mine is Vol/Vol, High/Low Mid, Treble/Bass stack pots (JZ3 Pro).

Alternatively put an MXR M81 Bass Preamp pedal on your pedalboard.
