Could someone compare the output of a Trilogy to a Humbucker
« on: April 15, 2006, 04:38:11 PM »
I've been listening to the the sound of the trilogy in the players forum and they sound great! I'm looking for that deep, darker tone in an sc pickup. However, I do not necessarily need super hot output. Does anyone know the output of the trilogy compared to say a "standard" (if there is such a thing) humbucker?
Thanks!

I have a guitar with a Cold Sweat HB in the bridge and a Trilogy Suite in the neck. It IS very hot for a single coil,  not as honky as my Irish Tour. It also isn't very 'vintage' sounding. It will never sound like a humbucker, tho. I like the Trilogy Suite for clean stuff, too.

Depending on what you're looking for, another option may be the Slow Hand. It's not as clean as an Apache or Mother's Milk, nor as pumped up as a Trilogy or Sinner. It also has that darker quality of the Trilogy.

This is the guitar my Trilogy is in:

Are your Cold Sweat and Trilogy of similar volume?

Just as some background. I have a Hamer USA Mirage (3 single coil pickups, no pickguard) which has a mahogany body and koa top. I had Lace chrome domes which were dark enough but were too sterile sounding and I now have Kinmans which sounded great in my Strat but are just too bright for the Mirage. I'm looking to make this guitar a little darker and a little more powerful than a Strat but stille retain some single coilness. I'm trying to capture a horn like tone but with a broader spectrum than an HB. I will then put the Kinmans back in my Strat where they belong.

I have a Hamer FM Studio with Swineshead humbuckers in it that are the sweetest, singingest HBs I've ever played. They are not powerful by HB standards but have plenty more output than an SC. If the Trilogy suite has that kind of power I can deal, but if it's more powerful than that I think they will be to boomy.

Also, Is that your setup? That's quite a nice looking rig there!

Yes! I've never had a problem matching the volume of my BK pups.

It gets the job done. :) Usually, for rehearsal, I use a Diezel VH-4. My main amp is a Splawn Quick Rod. (Picture Below)

I wired TO's guitar and I have the center setting putting one coil of the Clod Sweat and the Trilogy in series as a humbucker.  They balance very well like this.  I had the same thing with a Nailbomb too.
So many pickups, so little time
