Final check before I pull the trigger on a Riff Raff set
« on: April 16, 2019, 10:52:28 PM »
I'm about to pull the trigger on a Riff Raff set but just want a final check before I do so. They'll be going in a Fender Custom Tele which has a chambered mahogany body with a maple top, a set mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard - so all in all, pretty similar to a modern Les Paul but in a Tele shape. As a result, the guitar is warm and very resonant. Currently it has the stock Fender Atomic and Black Canyon pickups installed but has also had Mules, Nail Bombs and Rebel Yells in there at different times. The Rebel Yells lacked pick attack and brightness at the top end in this guitar, the Mules were good but needed a little more bite which the Nail Bombs had but as I already have them in 2 other guitars, I'm really after something different for this one, something bright and a little less compressed. So, basically I'm after a more "bitey" mule, which I believe sounds a lot like the description of the Riff Raff. This guitar isn't really for metal (I have other guitars for that) but I would like it to be able to handle alternative and new wave styles as well as quite aggresive rock and hard rock when needed. What are your thoughts?

A more bitey Mule is RiffRaff. Did you consider HB-sized P90's?
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I have considered them but TBH I think I'll find them too noisy unfortunately.

… and having just played my Nail Bombs again, I've just remembered why I like them so much - loads of bite and pick attack but also a great "mix-sitter" -  the perfect rhythm pickup. Maybe I should just go for a third set of Nail Bombs! Would it be fair, do you think, to describe the Nail Bomb as a "bigger" Riff Raff?

Riff Raffs are great
Just make sure you have the bridge pickup very close to strings for maximum punch
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
