Direct mounting pickups

I've just gone to swap out pickups in one of my guitars and they are direct mounted to the body. The issue that I have is that when I go to screw the new ones in the old screw holes are now wider so they aren't gripping. I was thinking that maybe the old match stick and wood glue trick might work but wondering if that's a good idea in this case or if there's a better option. I'm sure I'm not the first person that's come across this problem so hoping someone can give me some advice. Thanks.

Match sticks will work and there is nothing wrong with that. I have seen all kinds of weird stuff used, including plastic.

This doesn't help you now, buy may in the future: when screwing and unscrewing metal into wood you need to try to use the same screws and line up the threads before screwing it back in.

Here is what I do;
- I lightly line the screw up and use weight of the screw driver to apply down pressure - don't push down.
- I lightly twist the screwdriver with my finger tips, COUNTER CLOCKWISE - as if I was unscrewing it - until I feel the screw "click" into place.
- Then I slowly screw the screw back in.

... This prevents cross threading the holes which eventually wares out the hole.

Thank you for the response. My problem now is I can't seem to raise the pickups high enough without the screws popping out :( It's weird cos the stock pickups have the same length legs as the BKPs. One suggestion I'd had was to use springs but I'm not sure if that's help or not.
