Neck pickup for an SG
« on: December 14, 2020, 06:05:06 PM »
Currently have an Epiphone SG Pro.
Looking to upgrade a few things, the Switch and Jack (usual Ephiphone issues).
I have a spare Semour Duncan SH04/JB I was going to put in the bridge and it looks like
the pickup covers will fit.
Now for the neck I was thinking of the classic JB Bridge and SD Jazz (SH-2) in the neck,
but I like Bare Knuckle (have Appaches, Mules and Rebel Yells in other guitars).
So what would be a Bare Knuckle SH-2 Equivalent?

The only Bare Knuckle in that mid 7k DC resistance range with an Alnico V magnet is the Riff Raff neck. Like the Jazz it's a bright pickup with plenty of bite, but with the scatterwind and short bar magnet it's got a more vintage flavour with a hollow/woody midrange and PAF-y open-ness. Certainly a great choice for an SG (as the name might imply)!
If you want something with a bit more mid and output you might want to look at the Holy Diver neck pickup, which has a slightly hotter wind and longer magnet. I'd suggest this would pair more easily with a JB if that's what you're planning on doing.
