Help pimp my pickups
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:38:01 PM »
Hi everyone,
I know most of you have been asked this a lot, but i'm new, and there are some many good pickups to choose from that i'm just not sure which ones to get :? . I have a Godin Freeway Classic with two stock humbuckers, and a single-coil. I would like to have a similliar tone to Slash/page which is also capable of the B.B king and early Eric Clapton stuff. Just to make it a bit more difficult for you i also like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Nailbomb seems to be one of the most versatile pickups, and I've read people recommending it for Satch and Vai tones aswell. However the other stuff seems more suited to something like Mules or VHII or something like that.. I have Mules in an LP Custom and they are really versatile, I can play most styles of music on this LP now  :D

The Mule is a very versatile pickup, I have a set in a 95 LP standard and I can do Classic rock tones to high gain and they sound great. I am playing through a vox tonelab and a marshall power amp, using models from Fender Bassman for bluesey stuff up to Soldano models for high gain and the Mule sounds great.

I have also just ordered a VHII for one of my customs and can't wait to hear how that is gonna sound.

Thanks a lot :D , I have been looking at the VHII and the mule and they sounded much better than anything else i heard. I hadn't actually listened to anything from a nailbomb, but i will now. One other thing my guitar has a five way strat like selector switch, with one tone and volume pot. I can selct  the two humbuckers and the single-coil on their own; or each humbucker with the single-coil. I was wondering if i added a rotary switch and got the humbuckers with four conductor wiring whether it would be possible to add coil tap, and have the two humbuckers in unison.

Should be with me by the end of the week, got it from Guitarzone (please don't stike me off the forum Tim!)
If I can remember where the hell I have put the soldering iron and the solder I should be cranking it by the weekend.  :guitar4:

Thanks a lot indysmith, but i have just heard the stormy monday (Tims' suggestion) and i couldn't believe how good it sounded as there are barely any posts about them, i can't decide between the two at the minute :? . But i am hoping to make a decision by the end of this week. When i get them though i willl tell you what i think.

I would go for the Nailbomb... It can do the high gain stuff, but you'll have to dig in hard for the best results!

Thanks Steve-Mr Pig 2U, i have listened to the Nailbomb, but it sounds a bit to metally for me. But thanks for the suggestion anyway.
