Help deciding new pickups!
« on: July 03, 2022, 04:52:50 AM »
Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and excited to be here! I'm currently  looking to get a new set of pickups to replace my SD Nazgul/Sentient combo. They'll go into a schecter banshee 7. I typically play in drop a flat with 11 gauge strings into neural dsp amp sims. I'm looking for something that can deliver a tight snarly chug with clarity for chords and riffs. The SD combo I mentioned can do that for the most part, but I've heard Bareknuckle can do it better. I want there to be enough bass for punch without being muddy or sacrificing crunch, able to handle pushing mids on the amp if i need to, and enough high end to get a good attack/crunch on chuggy palm mutes, and to just sound angry in general. For cleans I'm not really concerned. I like tones from Sworn In(Deathcard album), Periphery(P2 album), Loathe, Alpha Wolf, Dealer, Suicide Silence to name some references. I've been looking into the ceramic warpig, ceramic nailbomb, painkiller, and ragnarok but am open to any suggestion. Any help would be much appreciated thanks!!

I am not super familiar with all the bands you mention, but I have experience with both of the Ragnarok and the Ceramic Nailbomb (Cbomb) and I think either could do it.

The Cbomb is a bit more oldschool and gives a bit of an 90s vibe but can do brutal or modern - for instance, Ryan Siew uses em and gets great tones. I find the top end of the Cbomb can sometimes be a bit harsh depending on how you are dialling things in - probably not a problem because you are using neural plugins.

All in all, I would probably suggest the Ragnarok - Misha from periphery uses em obviously as a sig pick so itll cover periphery stuff find, but I dont think they are a djent pickup compared to some other of the sig pickups from periphery. For me they handle heavy music of all forms very well. They can be brutal and punchy, but not overbearing in the treble or bass. The other thing I would say is, I find the mid range of the ragnarok a bit more modern sounding than the Cbomb. I also find the Ragnarok very easy to play because there is a reasonable amount of compression.
