dif magnets means diferent resonant peak?
« on: May 11, 2006, 05:45:23 PM »
some guy is asking this at the duncan forums, where people dont know shyt from shinola, so i'd figger i'd ask the gurus here.

tim, steve, anybody that knows 100%

how does a diferent magnet (a2,3,4,5, ceramic, 3 ceramics, etc etc) change the resonant peak on the same pickup at a magnet swap

A magnet on it's own has no sound but the material they are made from will push certain frequencies more/less depending on what it is.The higher the resonant peak the brighter the tone generally. So if a magnet emphasises a certain peak frequency it will push the resonant peak higher.I think from what you've said, people are just commenting on how different magnets emphasise audible peaks in pickup tone.Something to keep in mind is that most guitar speakers won't reproduce some of the higher quoted res peaks!

well, some dude got in a hissy fit that the distortion and JB arent the same pickup..

yet it was proven that they were, so he's trying to find the smallest reason that the winds are diferent due to the slightly diferent voicing and the same resonance peak. he's saying that the magnet changes the peak a lot etc etc.

how does the strenght of the magnet come into the equasion?

If a pickup  has a strong peak on a particular frequency, lets say in the mids, then Alnico V will accentuate that whereas ceramic, being more effecient, will push the bass and highs and accent them. Therefore the same coils could produce two different tones dependant on what magnet was powering them.
