HSS, The Mule - Apache question
« on: October 24, 2023, 01:34:19 PM »
Hi I'm considering BKP HSS, The Mule - Apache for my next guitar (Aristides) and i see no mention of how the pickups will eliminate hum. also , does anybody have this combo, how do you like it? any issues ?

Well, the Mule will eliminate hum because it's a humbucker. The Apaches won't because they're true single coils - Bare Knuckle don't make a "noiseless"/hum-cancelling single coil.

If you connect the bridge coil which is opposite polarity with the middle pickup you can get humcancellation for the split bridge + middle combo. It may not be perfect due to the different number of windings on the coils but it will definitely be better than the single coils on their own.

The polarity can be checked with a small compass or with a spare pickup. I used to use an old DiMarzio SDS-1 for that purpose. Put it over the pickup under test and watch if the poles attract or repel. You will want to combine an attracting with a repelling coil for humcancelling operation.

Cheers Stephan
