Tele pups: Yardbird set or Yardbird (neck) + Boss (br)?
« on: May 23, 2006, 01:19:23 PM »
Noob alert! Ah yes, the classic "which pickups for me?" question, also known as the "tell me what I like" question. :-)

I can't decide between getting the standard Yardbird set or go for a mix that includes the yardbird neck pickup and the Boss bridge. I'm pretty much certain I'll want the Yardbird neck pickup. My Tele is a US-made Fender Tele with rosewood fingerboard and modern 6 saddle bridge. I plan to add a 4-way switch.

What I want (don't we all?) is maximum versatility even though I play a wide variety of styles that include many at the cleaner end of the spectrum. Tim kindly suggested I go for the Yardbird set (thanks for such a speedy reply Tim), but I wondered if I would be missing out on more sonic options if I didn't mix in a different bridge pup. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Andy.

I got the Brown Sugar set with a Slowhand neck.  I know that this is really non-standard, but it does give you a lot of options (especially with the 4-way switch).  This gives you a bit brighter sound than the Yardbird set, but it is very Led Zeppelin I like.  I am using it in an Ash bodied tele with a maple neck.
So many pickups, so little time

Thanks. Hmm, yet another option! :-)

Even brighter than the Yardbird set you say? I was thinking that the Yardbird set might be too bright already (for my tastes) and that I needed to add more meat by pairing the Yardbird neck (which seems to be universally raved about here) with a more pokey bridge such as the Boss. I'm finding it hard to make up my mind - stay safe and take the standard Yardbird neck and bridge set or go for a bit of a gamble and throw in the Boss bridge pup instead of the Yardbird bridge.

Any more thoughts?

Well, I decided to go with the standard Yardbird set in the end - ordered yesterday. I'll post again once I have them installed with my 4-way switch - seems there's very few Tele demo clips on here so I might post some noodlings. Although I'm a keys man really so unless people want some Fender Rhodes clips I may bottle it!

Do both - Tele + Fender Rhoades - it'd be like the 70s  :D
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Hehe, OK. I will definitely have to track the parts though - even if it were possible to play both parts at once, I only have one valve amp.  :)

I received the Yardbird pickup set and 4-way switch today - excellent service from Tim. Once they're installed I'll try to put together a demo.
