New Strat!
« on: May 16, 2006, 04:41:46 AM »
Yes I have finally succombed to the dark side, I vowed never to buy a strat and yet here I am, the owner of a brand new Squier Standard. Honestly it is not as bad as I thought  . This is probably the best Strat that I have ever played, and I tried basically every guitar in the store before deciding on this one!

This Guitar is basically going to be my "pimp it out" project guitar if you will. I have already posted a question about my first modification in the tech forum. But basically I want to know what you guys think about which pups I should get.

I have my eye on the Sinner/Trilogy/Trilogy set right now but I am interested on your opinions. As of right now the guitar has an excellent clean tone, seriously I have never heard a Strat sound as good as this one. But it also sounds shitee distorted. Can the S/T/T set still do awesome cleans or are they designed for heavy stuff? I play in a band that plays mostly heavy blues with a strong rock influence, hopefully I'll have clips of us someday  .

I have a Nailbomb equiped Schecter Blackjack, and just cannot bare to hurt it. This is why I bought this guitar, and it just screams for some BKP treatment. So after a long and tedious read my question is simply this. Will I be able to get good cleans, and yet still be able to create hellish distortion with the S/T/T set? if not what do you guys recomend?

Cheers!
Joe

In short YES!

The sinner is a very different beast in the bridge position of the Strat and just LOVES distortion - a sort of single coil Warpig.

The cleans are not great to my ears but the drive is why I love it - (mine is wound extra-hot BTW).

It always retains the single coil character but it drives really hard.

I've got vintage output Duncans in the other positions on my switch to get a classic "strat quack" and I love the combination of getting a vintage tone then slap it to the bridge where all hell awaits!

I'm sure most people would suggest Irish Tours for your neck and middle but I've no experience with them so...

Ah, c'mon!  That's never stopped the rest of us.  ;)

The Sinner does do good cleans, but it won't give that sweet single coil sound that a lower output pickup will do.  So don't expect it to sound vintage.  I find that the sound is harder, for want of a better word.  It does certainly do blues well, though.  I'm using the bridge pickup more than I ever have in my life, since I only have a BKP in the bridge position of my Strat-alike guitar.  It also does pretty convincing heavy rock and is much less flabby when distorted than most single coils.

I personally, after hearing all the clips, big SRV fan(clean and dirty tones) Would keep the Sinner choice for bridge and get two Irish Tours for neck and middle.   They  sound awesome clean and probably even better driven for blues.  After much deliberation between listening to all the Apache, Mothers Milk and Irish Tour clips I have some Irish Tours on the way.  Just my opinion, though.   Cheers

I was thinking (a big mistake!), could three different singles work together? I was thinking like Sinner in bridge for the heavy stuff I need, Trilogy in the middle to mix with the Sinner, and possible a Irish tour in the neck for the cleans. How well do you think the Bridge/Mid and Mid/Neck combinations would work. I only ask because I know that using those two together cancells out the hum. Just a thought!

You are right about hum canceling but all you need to specify is a Reverse Wound - Reverse Polarity middle and that is what does the job.

I think all single coil sets come with the RWRP as standard unless requested otherwise.

I think you might be overthinking and going a little off target with the 3 different model idea, as the sets are callibrated to take position into account.

So which will have a more classic rock tone? Sinner/Trilogy/Trilogy or Sinner/Irish/Irish?

I need some versatilitly because we have some really bluesy clips, and just wrote a song where the distortion needs to be cut back.

I'm thinking S/I/I but what do you guys think?

my problems similiar to this, thinking of getting BKP's for my squier (probably in a pre-wired scratchplate), then when I get A decent strat move the lot (pickups, scratchplate, electronics and All) into the better one. maybe move the fender kit into the squier too, depends and just use that as a fiddler guitar for experimenting with cos its worth nothing. Anyway, I'm mainly into blues based rock in varying degrees of heavyness. Hendrix, page, rory gallagher, SRV, Jack white. I'm not looking for any of their tones in particular, and I was considering Sinner/Irish Tour/Irish Tour set. However I was thinking of getting a slightly less powerful pup for the neck. Maybe an Irish Tour that isn't wound so hot, or maybe a mothers milk or slow hand, since they are both alnico V. I dont want anything hugely different, just something that cleans up a bit nicer. What do you guys recommend?

Well I have just got from a gig where I used my Apache loaded Strat and aklso my Slowhand loaded Strat. We do a bit of Hendrix occasionally ( not tonight though) and the Apaches cope very well. Indeed tonight they sounded wonderful- as did the Slowhands. Plenty of ooomph when you crank things up and clean up to pure snappy Stratty "sprang".
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.
