Boss or Piledriver set
« on: June 03, 2006, 02:31:47 PM »
I just found out about these pickups and have been reading up about them.

I just need to decide on whether the Boss or Piledriver set would be better for me.

I play roots rock and Alt country ( slobberbone, lucero whiskeytown type thing )with a Rosewood neck '89 Tele, at the moment it has a lil '59 in the bridge and I'm not happy with the sound at all, whilst it is a bit fatter it has a horrible nasal tone.

I need something that will truely rock out and give les pauls a run for there money, but also be cool for the more sensitive side and also the more Trad Country style songs.  More than one guitar would really be the obvious answer, but after getting a custom built Bourgeios Slope D, money is a bit scarce!

Hello-welcome to the forum. Someone else asked a similar question and whilst I am a Tele & Strat  player - I have country boys in my Tele and they are more traditional vintage Tele than you may be looking for. I understand ( from a previous response) that the Piledrivers have the output but do clean up well when backing off the volume and so the answer seems to be Yes. The Boss set have less output and more mids. One thing I would say ( and this is a recurring theme with me so forgive me all those who have heard it before) is to get a 4 way switch as you can get the normal n, N & B and B pups plus the N & P in series. Not sure how it works with high output pups like Piledrivers but it addsto the Tele's legendary adapability. If I am wrong on any of this, I am sure others will chime in.

I used to have a lil 59 in my maple neck tele, but took it out a long time ago!  I have a Piledriver in it now and I love the sound.  With a rosewood neck, I think it will give you a really nice set of tines, but also the boss will too.  I think the boss is a little brighter than the piledriver and not as fat sounding.
So many pickups, so little time

I'll give Oxford Guitar Gallery a call and see if they have Teles loaded up with the two sets and see if I can do a comparison.

Well I've taken a leap of faith and booked my guitar in for a set up and a set of Piledrivers installing 1st week of July.

Can't wait to try them out.

Let us know and post a clip! I've got a sudden urge to get a tele (I was thinking of the Richie Kotzen sig, not so pricey and more comfy with the chamfering) and have been thinking the same thing re pups!

Although I do hear that the RK has a massive neck, its very pretty though.

It's in the hands of Dave now.

I pick it up on Monday when I'll have something in common with McFly!!!!!!!

It's a shame all my music stuff is at my mates house whilst I try and sell mine.  He'll be getting lots of visits
