Using a Boost with a JMP-1
« on: June 17, 2006, 05:56:40 PM »
Hey there,
I'm planning on getting a JMP-1 preamp soon but am a little worried that it may lack just a little gain and was planning on getting a boost pedal for it (probably a TS-9 or SD-1), but after looking at a few of the reviews over at Harmony Central there seems to be a huge debate as to whether the thing is a valve amp or not.

I was wondering then is it actually advisable to use a boost with it?

Cheers - Tom

The JMP1 has valves in it, but it's not a pure valve preamp as far as I know.  As to the amount of gain it depends on what style you play, but I play in a hard-rock band with a definite Metal edge, and I don't even use the OD2 channel.  The OD1 gives me plenty enough gain to dial in some great sounds.

As to pedals I honestly couldn't say as I've never tried it.

Cheers for that Muttley

I'm mainly going to be using it for metal, modern and old school, but like to have the flexibilty of having all the presets so I can have a large variety of tones.

Also plan on using it for bass distortion, which is gonna take some experimenting I think.

I used a JMP1 for a few years with a Boss SD1 od pedal in front, it sounded good. The JMP1 has a single 12ax7 preamp valve inside and a lot of circuitry. I never tried it but rumour has it that you can remove the valve and the JMP1 carrys on working without much tonal change. saying that they do sound good. Just my opinion.
