Author Topic: Question about Marshall 1936 2x12 cab (Read 4952 times)

Hey guys.

I have a Marshall 1936 2x12 speaker cab with 2 75w celestions in it and I just have a quick query about it.

The cab has 2 inputs on the back:

1 is labelled Left 75w Stereo 4 or 16 ohms and the other is labelled Right 75w Stereo 4 or 16 ohms / Mono 150w 8 ohms.

Am I able to plug 2 separate amp heads into this cab each on a different input or is this likely to blow something up?

I just wondered if it's safe as I'm considering using both my Orange AD30 and Marshall JCM800 2210 amps live and it'd be handy if I could safely plug both into the same cab

one can have a lot of bad attitudes towards marshall, but they DO have a proper website:

Yes you can plug 2 different heads in, just remember that the resistance must be either 4 or 16 ohms.
What this does is that it will bassically split the cab in half, the head going into the left input with power the left speaker, and the head going into the right input will power the right speaker.

I plan on plugging my Orange AD30 head into 1 side of the cab and my JCM800 Swplit Channel head into the other as I love the sounds of both amps and can't decide which I 'prefer' for live work with my band :)

Also means you can stick an ABY switch through them without sounding shitee because each amp would have its own speaker...playing them both at once on different settings might provide some interesting results - there's something to try when i get a second amp :P

That's kinda my plan really :)

I tend to set my Orange crunchy and then kick it in the ass with OD pedals to get my Overdrive etc. The problem I have with this is that I use a Fulltone Fat Boost at the end of my signal chain as a volume boost for solos, and because I set the Orange gritty, when I kick on the solo boost all it does is boosts the gain and not the volume. This is the main reason I started to use my JCM800 again :)

So now I now it's safe to plug both into the 1 cab, I can mix the 2 as I see fit :)

So rather than setting a crunchy orange, you set it clean and kick in the JCM when you need gainyness...Sounds nice - and is a very good plan until you can afford a pair of 4x12's :P

Nope, my plan is to keep the Orange gritty and when I kick on the Fat Boost for solos, the JCM kinda takes over and the Orange is used more for differing tones :)

I already have an Orange 4x12 cab, but it's a Mono 1 and I also have no way of transporting 2 4x12s around to gigs etc

just a small idea, which you might have considered, but why not rewire it for stereo?

shouldn't be too difficult I imagine. you could even copy the circuit from a marshall 4x12 which is wired for stereo.

It's a vintage 1970s cab with the Original Greenbacks in it, so to be honest, I don't really wanna go cutting holes in it for new jack sockets etc :)
