not a secret, but it is one of their Custom Shop pups.  it's US$160, so it's in the same price bracket as the VHII.

All I can say is I've had 2 come in to be rewound over the past few months, they're symmetrically wound coils of 42 AWG plain enamel wire-the pair I tested came in at DC8.9 and 9K, sat on a polished Alnico II magnet.
So...............nothing like a VHII at all, which has offset coils, DC9.2K and Alnico V.
I'm not going to comment on the tone as it'd be viewed as subjective.

I read an article that said you can call Seymour Duncan and request the pickup and they would sell you one, but EVH wouldn't let them advertise it or market it so they can't tell you about it or something.   It did say it was a custom shop pickup too, but only available by request or something.  Apparently they made (or at least claim to have made) the pickup for EVH for VH1.

I do see one called the '78/EVH (evenly voiced harmonics), I guess that has to be it?

I would like to see that article. Where did you read all that? It sounds almost completely false.

It's the first pickup on the page. And the forum is LOADED with info on the pickup, with lots of posts by the people that actually make it. Hardly a 'secret' pickup!

Yeah. And also, him selling it and advertising, makes it seem to the fans like I'm selling myself. They don't know that I'm against it. They think that I'm out for the bucks. That's not it at all. So it's kind of a drag. There's another guy too...See, I've rewound my own pickups before, and a guy named Seymour Duncan, I got pissed at him too. He called me up and said, "Can we use your name for a special pickup?" And I said no. Next time I pick up Guitar Player magazine, there's a special Van Halen model customized Duncan pickup. I called him up and said, "What the hell's goin' on?" So he stopped finally. It's just kind of weird you know.

So then I found out about Charvel, but I'm suing them right now because it's actually my guitar design that's keeping them in business. See, Wayne Charvel sold it to another guy, and Wayne was a real cool dude. When he owned it, I was considering endorsing it. And then this other dude took over, and he's just sold so many of them for like a grand apiece.

little something about  charvel aswell.
