Which one....
« on: June 23, 2006, 08:23:25 PM »
Hey
I'm a complete newbie... until a few hours i had never even heard of BKP... i know i know i lived under a rock. Now I've seen the light, AND i want more...

I'm buying a PRS soapbar II SE soon.... I love the P-90s for their clean tones, but stick it in OD, and it SQUEALLLS like a sea of rats...

I'm intending to change the bridge pickup for one of these BKP babies... Question is, Which one?? - i'll need one that can be covered (to go with the PRS) and i'll be playing through a Line 6 spider 2. (yes slightly crazy combinations).

My distorted taste varies; GnR to Metallica, Nickelback, Jet e.c.t.. and i love Steve Vai...
I'm mainly a rythm guitarist... and my style apparently is somewhat unorthadox...

Any suggestions/reccommendations would be fantastic
Thanks

well youve got three/four to choose from..

(i think...)

-BKP90
-BKP91
-BKP92
-Pig 90... (which is unofficial)...

basically they increase in output as the number goes up... with the pig-90 having the highest output... the pig-90 is a cross between a warpig humbucker (the highest output in the whole BKP range) and a BKP p-90 so its pretty beastly... you may know alll this already from browsing but in case you dont it'll help some.

as for the tones you described... i would say probably not the BKP90... (you'll probably want (even if you dont NEED) slightly more output for stuff like metallica) and probably not the Pig-90 (im guessing a bit too hot for stuff like Jet) .... so probly the '91 or the '92 should generally suit your style(ish) im thinking...

i remember i asked Tim for something that could do rock based stuff...  classic rock to hard rock kinda stuff... and i was thinking "yeh man ill get the pig-90 its the highest output so must be the best" e.t.c e.t.c.... but Tim calmed me down and recommended a lower output one.. '91/'92 i think, cant remember lol... but yer... thats my take on things...

and welcome to the forum of course, and well done for realising P-90s are the superiors in the pickup world...    hope you enjoy whatever you choose... and of course you can always ask Tim (the owner) himself what he recommends... although i would say to go from Jet to Metallica and dime the tone perfectly probably isnt going to happen... especially with a p-90... but a '91/'92 should be a good general ball-park kinda sound...

just my personal (and fairly insignificant) view on the matter.

I don't think BKP makes a humbucker in P-90 size.

They don't... I'll have to widen the space for it and put in a border thingymagic for it... process is pretty much irreversible i know....

question is, WHICH ONE??

Why are you buying a PRS with P90s if you're gonna have to rout the guitar for humbuckers? Surely you would be better off buying a PRS with humbuckers in already  :?

Yeah,
I've been told alla that before :D

my reasons are:

I love the look and feel of the Soapbar and the colour "blue matteo" is what i'm after the most... Ive tried various other PRSs.. EGs, custom SEs ect... but none have come to my liking as much... so i was going to buy it.. until i tried one on a line 6... i couldnt play it under metal settings cos it squealed so much..

my friend gave me the idea of the humbucker at the bridge and i liked it.. it will be something quite unique.... :)

just WHICH ONE??... i'm liking the nailbomb, but i'm no expert and i don't know if it wil match what i'm after...

Do BKP P90s squeal - I thought they were double wax potted to stop that sort of thing - it could be crummy PRS pickups that are the problem.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Those tones are quite varied.  It's hard to recommend one pickup to cover them all when BKP has several pickups that will work really well for each of them.

GnR - Mule or Stormy Monday

Metallica - Miracle Man

Nickelback and Jet - Emerald?

Steve Vai - Cold Sweat?

Take your pick.  Perhaps someone who's used more BKPs than myself will come along soon.

Nailbombs or Rebel Yells seem like they would be quite versatile. Mules are pretty versatile aswell I found.

Crawler or Rebel Yell!  (Though, admittedly, those seem to be my answers to everything today .... ;))

Mules are extremely versatile but maybe not quite enough power for what you're after so Abraxas, Rebel Yell or Crawler are all well worth considering.
