Falling in love wth an older (and overpriced) guitar.
« on: July 12, 2006, 05:59:14 PM »
I saw this guitar and, you know, something just kinda clicked. Anyway, I was thinking about her for a while and decided to check her out, play with her, that kind of thing. And I think I want her, need her? Maybe. But I think she's too much for me. Sure there are plenty of nice guitars around, maybe I can get something better or younger and cheaper. But what should I do?

So anyway, there's this Ibanez Sabre, a 1989 S540 to be precise, Desert Yellow but with matching headstock (the standard was black) which makes it a little more interesting and more Frank Gambale than a Frank Gambale. A few dinks and a chip. The guy wants about GBP500  (thats quid) for it. It's certainly a decent guitar but talking to people on Jemsite they say its well overpriced (certainly for the US anyway I guess) one guy says he got his S540 for 300 US dollars, and his has the all access neck joint which this doesnt (but his is black not psycho yellow).

I guess I'm not looking for advice, I just need someone to talk to.
But any comments welcome

Still a very nice guitar if it's in good condition
Maybe £500 is rather a lot - although they were about £700 new

To get one for $300 (dollars) which is about £160 is pretty unbelieveable
You can baarely get a starter guitar for much less than that

I do feel that Ibanez guitars made in Japan in the late 80s were of better quality than some more recent Korean ones and whereever else they are made now.

I'm a bit of an RG Ibanez collector, and I have a few from the late eighties/early nineties.  I haven't paid more than £375 recently, and that was for an RG770DX in Laser Blue.  I don't think your 540 is worth more than £400 on the general market.  If you really HAVE to have that particular guitar, then the seller can name his price I guess.  Are you prepared to pay it though???

I recently sold my S540--which was in absolutely pristine condition--for about  300 quid.

if it was #400 I'd jump at it but I'm thinking 500 is a touch too much, it's just that I love this model in this particular colour and haven't seen any others around. I could save up and get a Musicman Petrucci 7 sring for about 1100 :?
