Bridge Pickup
« on: July 21, 2006, 06:42:02 PM »
Hi all,

I recently discovered the BK pickups and the first thing I heard. was the Rebel Yell clip (WOW!). I also read a few things about hand made pickups, and after hearing a couple clips I'm convinced to get a BK for my guitar.

I have a cheap Ibanez RG-270, but I like it very much cause it's my first (and only one!) guitar! I currently have a PAF-pro humbucker in the bridge position. I like the sound I get very much, I use DS-1 and SD-2 pedals for the distorted sound. I like that it responds a lot to the picking strength and I you play hard it screams! I would like it more if it had a bit more output.

Can some one tell/suggest me a BK pickup for the replacement of my PAF-pro. I want it to have simmilar to th ePAF-pro sound with some more output.

Thanx!

Welcome. Check out the VHII or the Mule.

I would say the Mule, but without that midrange honk the Paf Pro has and it  handles high gain much better.

The Crawler would be another one to look at, it's a bit hotter than the mule.

The Paf Pro is hotter and more modern than the Mule. I think a VHII would be a nice choice. Raw PAF sound with more presence - just what the Paf Pro wants to sound like. I believe a Rebel Yell bridge + something out of the PAF range for the neck position would also be a great combo. The RY is among the best choices when you want the best of both - low- and high-output - worlds combined.

VHII, it's got the midrange honk and harmonic depth that the PAF Pro tries to achieve but with a broader responsive range and more chewiness... :D

Thanx for your replies!

I listened to a few clips of all the pickups you suggested and the ones I liked most were the Rebel Yell and one from VHII. Off course the settings of each player play a big part on the final sound of the pickup. I think that one of those two pickus will be my final choice, but first I'll have to listen to the clips over and over again some more times, using my best speakers to be able to judge better.

I have to say that I'm pretty weird wich my taste on the pickups. I play only with the bridge for rythm and solo distorted parts. And I love the sound that I get from my splitted PAF-pro combined with the middle single coil pickup, for the clean parts. I had also tried the Tone Zone pickup, and although I liked the sound it produced for the rythm parts of a song, I didn't like how it sounded for the lead parts (too much edge for my taste). As a matter of fact I haven't heard anything better than how the PAF-pro sounds when playing lead. It's a very round, brown and sweet sound (excuse me if I don't use the right words, I'm not familiar with tech vocabulary!), but also screams when you pick harder. I would want to lose that with my new pick up. I also like very much that midrange honk that the PAF-Pro has.

Do you think that Rebel Yell or VHII would cover my needs?

Thanx!

Probably. But if you love your PAF Pro, why changing it?? The BKP pickups will have another tone. There is no "PAF Pro but better" pickup in the BKP line. Just different pickups.

Because I'm trying to find the pickup that matches most to my taste! I just pointed out the things I like about PAF-pro and I wouldn't want to miss in my new pickup. I read the discription od VHII and it's probably the one that'll will suit me. But when I listen to the Rebel Yell clip by S.S.... WOW!
I'm not a pro player, and I got the PAF-pro a couple of years ago by accident! So I don't know exactly which one will suit better. That's why I'm asking you! And if I told you what kinds of music I like playin', you'd probably tell me that it can't be done with only one guitar! :)

Thanx!

The VHII is a wonderful pickup, one that covers many styles but with the right amp it really nails the brown sound.

I've just ordered my second set of VHII's and I think it's fair to say it has become my favourite humbucker.

It just handles everything that I throw at it so beautifully, it never muddies up, it's just so articulate.

It seems that VHII has currently my favor! I read carefully your replies and suggestions (thanx!), I heard a couple of clips, and it seems that VHII is (probably!) the pickup that will suit me.

From the description it is vintage, hot and it is versatile. And I wanted a pup, a bit more hot than my curently installed PAF pro. VHII has DC 9.2k and PAF pro 8.4k. Is that DC enough to make a difference?

So, I will wait to finish my guitar's bridge convertion (and to get paid soon!) and I'll think I'll give VHII a try! I think it is a wise choice to play from rock to heavy metal.

Thanx!
