Warpig for overdrive.
« on: August 19, 2006, 01:34:39 AM »
I'm checking out the Warpig as an option for reloading a Les Paul.

It's going to be used with an Orange that's set with the master volume dimed and the gain used as a volume (ie, no preamp dirt, all power amp dirt).

Anyway.....I was wondering if anyone used theirs this way?  Almost all the clips I've found are high gain clips, which isn't helping me any.

I know that louderthangod is flogging a Matamp this way......maybe I'll PM him.

The question is: How much dirt do you need...because the Warpig unleashes an ENTIRE MOUNTAIN RANGE OF IT.

No, the question is how does it sound.

Well, everyone who has them LOVES THEM. If the chugging metal is what you're into, you can't go wrong. Is that the answer you were looking for? They're very organic, very heavy, LOUD, and have very good cleans. The distortion, needless to say, is mind blowing.

Loud I should think.

You could try asking Brow. He uses Orange amps. Ask some Warpig users to try a similar setting on there amps and get some feedback that way!

It's a tricky one as it's an unusual request!

No, the question is how does it sound.

The Warpig sounds heavy, saturated and compressed. Compared to the SD Invader it has less presence but there's more weight in the bass and low-mid territory. Maybe it's dryer and more articulate. The low-end is very precise. It's a frightening, organic mass of sound.

I don't know what it would sound like with your setup, though. All I know is that I'd use a bright and articulate pickup for metal using power tube distortion.

Bright and articulate sounds like ass through power tube distortion.  That's why I'm looking at a Warpig and not a Nailbomb or Mule.

Will you decide between the Warpig and an EMG then?

EMGs are what I just pulled out.  They sound great with a high gain amp as they're clear and cut through the gain, but they sound like harsh cr@p through the Orange....it's like you're taking an icepick and stabbing it in your ear.  There's not enough gain in the thing to soften them up.  The Orange is like most non-master volume amps (Plexi, Hiwatt, ect)....it needs a good, fat sounding pickup to kick it in the ass.  Bright pickups thin out too much in it.

I've just installed a Super Distortion and it's sounding really good, but I'm looking to test drive an Invader, and possibly a Warpig if I can find some more low gain opinions.

I recently loaded my LP standard with a warpig, and I must say, I didnt really like it, just wasnt my thing, tim kindly exchanged it for  a nailbomb which I like much better. but thats just my two cents
