I would suggest you get a set of the same type-Tim goes to a lot of trouble to get the sounds right on the sets. If you are looking for a great core Strat tone then Apaches must be the choice. Do you really want to get the exact tone of the players you mention, given that they recorded in expensive studios with whatever gear they wanted and I would bet they  sounded different live.Get the basic tone right and I reckon you'd be able to approximate the sound you want- just a thought.

I'm with mr 38th here - Apaches will give you most of the tones you want.  The rest is really outboard equipment and skill.
So many pickups, so little time

I know the feeling    Really though if you think about it, all the great players sound like themselves on different guitars.  Some examples are:

Paul Kossoff - he is famous for his LP sound, but on the later Free albums he was using a Strat.
Gary Moore started on an SG, then went to a Les Paul and he is using a Strat now and he still sounds like Gary Moore.
Jeff Beck is the same (though he started on a Tele, then a Les Paul and now a Strat).
Jimmy Page - many of his famous "Les Paul" sounds are really his 50's Telecaster.

One other example is Tim - he gets the "Tim Mills" sound out of all his guitars regardless of the pickups.  It is just the colour of the tone that changes.

Completely agree Phil - there are often posts about what pickup/ what EQ settings do I need  to sound like XXX. Although the right pickup/settings will get you in the the right ballpark I wonder how many BKP buyers have been disappointed when they have fitted their new pickups to find that they are not magically transformed into their guitar heroes. There are many other factors (apart from studio processing) - feel, attack, plectrum/no plectrum etc.
I've mentioned this quote in another thread by a roady at a charity gig (Policeman's Ball??) where Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page were guesting and had to use the same amp/guitar setup. He said they all sounded amazing but completely different.
