Strap button ripped out earlier

Well, the strap buttons on my LP always have always worked themselves loose but earlier whilst playing the whole screw decided to rip itself out (so much for strap locks :lol:). Anyway, normally I just stuff some matchstick ends in with a load of wood glue, let it dry and screw back in, but this time seeing as the whole screw came out I thought I should do a proper job before it comes out again and I break my headstock or something..

Was thinking about drilling it out a bit then putting a rawl plug in the hole, or is that a bit too much :P Just wanted to ask here before I tried something like that then finding out it was a bad thing to do for whatever reason (tone sucking plastic!?! :roll:)

Jesus no, thats insane. just screw them back in, maybe use a pilot drill bit to guide it, but leave it at that.

Well at the minute it has nothing to screw into, hence why the screw came out :lol:

Screw in some BIG eye-bolts  :twisted:

Trouble with big bolts is that the hole in the strap button isnt very big so can only really fit the screws it came with.

To do the job properly you should dowel it with some hardwood

You will need
6mm drill
wood glue
6mm hardwood dowel
Hammer or something to tap dowel in
saw or chisel/file to level dowel after installing
3mm drill to drill pilot hole
Enough patience to do the job

Basically drill the existing hole out to 6mm
roll the dowel in glue and insert into hole- tap in with hammer
Some dowel should still stick out of the hole if you have gotten a long enogh one.
Leave overnight for glue to set
May be worth putting masking tape on the guitar body around dowel to protect finish
Saw the extra bit of dowel of and then level with a chisel and a file.
Once done - mark the centre of the dowel with a point where you will drill the pilot hole to put the screw back into
Drill 3mm hole , then carefully screw strapbutton into new hole

Sometimes i then unscew strap button again afterwards and dribble very runny superglue into the hole to make the wood very hard so when I put the screw back in the wood wont be brittle

That sounds better than using a rawl plug :lol: cheers. I'll just have to go searching for some hardwood dowell now..
