Author Topic: Tried my Strat into a Marshall MG today.. (Read 2879 times)

I've got two really nice valve amps at home.. the ENGL Screamer 50 which is a very distinct sounding metal amp and through that my guitar sounds pretty damn good and through the Carlton Camel it sounds fantastic.

But both of these amps are a bit too much on the Dark side of things, so i just plugged into a Marshall MG which i know is a cheap amp but it really let the guitar shine through on a brighter tone and it's exactly what im looking for.. not a marshall mg.. just something a bit more vintage and less huge and modern Mesa/Califorinian typical american toney..

so yea after listening to endless Bogner Shiva clips im really deciding this amp is to be the one, just gotta try one out with my axe and see how it comes out.. gonna get down to try one out in a few weeks.

I've got a Marshall MG100HDFX head that I plug into one of my 1960 cabs for practicing with, it's really awesome with the VHII's. Best practice amp I could wish for actually.

I hade the 2x12 version, and it was so transparent. I kinda miss the beast, but don't have space for a huge amp, and 100W was too much. Still a nice amp.

Weird, when I played the halfstack 100w MG I couldnt get a decent overdrive/distortion from it, it was too thin and fizzy.

Did you try turning off that contour control and ramming all the EQ controls to 10? That's how I've been running it as that's how I'd set up any other Marshall - I assume they've copied circuits from their other amps to mimic the tone but replaced valves with transistors, so that's why I run mine like a normal Marshall. Sounds pretty good to me - but the speakers in the cab you tried might have been cr@p though, I was using G12T-75's or G12M's.

Good point, it was through the MG cab so probably cr@p speakers if my mates AVT cab is anything to go by.. I didnt really play around with it much to be honest.

Maybe I should try one again with everything on 10 next time I go into a geetar shop, could probably pick up one of the small combos cheap on ebay as a practise amp.
