VHII w/two Mother's Milk
« on: October 20, 2006, 03:39:52 PM »
Tim recommended the VHII and a couple of Mother's Milk for my MIM Strat. I really like the sound of the individual pups, but have not heard them together in this specific combination. Does anybody have a sound clip of this?

Also, what will really sell me on the things are if there are any before/after clips - a clip with a stock Strat and a clip with said configuration.

Finally, though I don't doubt Tim in the least, what are your real-life opinions on this combination?

I can't help you in terms of clips but I can describe the sound - MIM Fender strat pickups are top ended and thin - their sonic spectrum ends hinting at midrange - kind of a thin Buddy Holly Peggy Sue tone.

The thing you first notice about Mother's Milks on the other hand is the eq range - they have top end, but have good mids and move into the bass end - never too much to be muddy (Mother's aren't muddy).  Because of they have an woody acoustic quality - I think Frusciante playing Under the Bridge or the opening to the Zephyr Song is a good example of the sort of tone i'm talking about (although he is using chorusing to thicken things up)

They also hint at power when clean and give it when wound up - so there is no comparison to Fender's own MIM.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

actually, the only chorus effect used on those two songs is for four bars on the outro of under the bridge ;) its a boss CE-2 by the way.

Im looking at getting the same pickup set soon for a new HSS strat-alike that i have to decide on, quite probably a PRS SE EG SSH. BKP's are only 20 mins drive away from here so im planning on ringing them and heading down for a look :)
