Author Topic: Question about the Ibanez S series (Read 5149 times)

OK I'm siffering from a serious GAS and although 'metal' guitars don't really appeal to me I was looking at an Ibanez S470. The main attraction was the thin body (and the nice neck) but after crusing the Ibanez site my eye settled upon S2170FW (and the FB).

Have asked in a few so called Ibanez stockists if the 2170 has the same 'skinny' body style, but received shrugs as it's wasn't a model which they where interested in stocking (the only expensive Ibanez models they where interested in stocking where Jems.) I assume that the SA & SZ do not have the thinner body as it's mot specifically memtioned.

I don't suppose anybody here has encountered this model in the wild.

Normally I'm very biased towards older tones (my wolfgang is normally too metal for me), but for some reason the S series is calling me, with something like RYs installed.

Bugger the middle age crisis has arrived with a vengance :(

fwiw I played some SZ series a while ago and I didnt find their bodies too thick, but they werent really thin either if thats what you're after? The pickups didnt sound very good though, but then again I was playing through a Line 6 amp. The necks were really nice though, got used to the shape really quickly

Yes i'm 99.9% CERTAIN that the 2170FW has the same thin body.
i own an Ibanez S1675FM (basically the same as the 2170FW but with a flamed maple top, Super Wizard neck, a D-tuner and a BKP Nailbomb) It's a great guitar, that ZR tremolo is brilliant. pretty techy but it functions amazingly when set up properly. The neck is incredible. i got my Ibanez from GAK - the only place i could find that had the model i wanted in stock. I swear I've just about the only one of this model in the country. The S-prestiges can be really hard to track down, but i suggest you ask GAK if they could get it in for you?

it's not that the SZ would be too thick, I just found the shape of the S so thin & comfortable (even with me being thick in the middle). Infact it reminded me of my mutant SG.

Thanks for the info on the trem, I was wondering about the ZR system. I may take a trip to Denmark St (yeah I know) to see if they have anything other than the RG, JS & jems in stock (esp the 2170).

I'm surprised that I fancy a guitar in this style as the Artist models would normally be much more my thing. I guess it proves that even I have a dark side ;)

I guess I'm just tired of always having budget model 6 strings even if they are more than up to my playing ability.

Hey you answered my question to perfection, for such a thin body though there is quite a bit of sustain in the less expensive models. Also weight wise and comfort wise it's great. It reminds me a bit like the stepped center section of the firebird

The only complaint that I have about it is the black switch surround (but hey I could live with that).

Though I wish somebody would to a LP (even better a double cut) in that kind of thickness it (perhaps it's time to talk to Jonathon)

Haven't seen one for real, and the photos still makes the LP (reduced in size by 2% acording to the .pdf file ) look a bit porky compared with the Ibanez. I dunno how thin they go with the SG

I also have to say that from the photo the violetburst is the prettiest LP I have seen for a long time, I may investigate them at the weekend (if I can be arsed to get up early enough)

I wonder if you get young Leo if you buy the SG (only if Carlsberg owned gibson I suppose)

The thickness is what caused me to lift the Ibanez off the wall in the first place. Hey if I can't be thing atleast my guitar can be :)

I suppose the raised switch surround is necessary on the Ibanez because the body's too shallow for the switch to fit! I love the burl top and I like the look of that ZR tremolo, but I always think Ibanez guitars are for lanky types, not shortarses like me.

However, I think the Violet Burst and Sky Burst Goddesses look awesome! I wonder if they've downsized the SG body at all, seems a bit pointless if they have. Shame they have the slim taper neck rather than the fat '59 shape (but I suppose that would defeat the object :roll: ).

Looks to me like young Leo could catch her death in that outfit. Glad to see her mum got her to wear those practical legwarmers...

Heh, combinatiion of stopping exercise (Akido & Tae Kwon Do), due to work & asthma (didn't know it was asthma at the time) and being put on very high steroid doses fo years at a time.

Oh yeah and the vending machines in work call my name all the time.
